A great story of the magnitude of Jock Stein and how much he achieved on and off the pitch for the city of Glasgow.

In 1956, after a heavy defeat to Rangers it became clear that Celtic could no longer challenge for the title that year.

A successful and much loved Celtic team was coming to the end of its days- with Stein, Peacock, Evans and Tully etc, a mix of catholic and Protestant player crowned as league champions 2 years before and Coronation Cup winners in 53 and celebrated as a victory for diversity in fractious times, all nearing the end of their careers

After that defeat fans favourite Tully, brought up in a Catholic community in the even more divided city of Belfast, was incensed - pointing to Stein and other Protestant players blaming them for defeat and saying “we need to get rid of these orange b*****s if we want to win anything.”

Stein jumped up and attacked Tully, punching him across the dressing room before grabbing him by the throat until his face turned blue- only stopping when Irish hard man Sean Fallon got in between the pair- possibly saving Tully’s life but also making it clear to him his rant was unacceptable and pointing out the success of the “mixed team” as it was known then in Glasgow.

The incident caused a major split in the dressing room that would never be healed- Tully apologised to the team for his comments but him and Stein never really spoke again off the park and Stein left the club around 6 months later.

He of course returned as the club’s first non-Catholic manager around a decade later- when Celtic were going through another slump and again calls were starting to come to make it “all Catholic” side in response to the apparent success of Rangers and their “no catholics” policy at the time- but Stein dug his heels in and insisted on keeping their founding principles of being a club “open to any race, religion or nationality” and was vital in the club retaining this policy.

In 1967, with a squad almost made up of a 50/50 split between religions, Stein led Celtic to the European Cup in Lisbon.

In 1971, Tully passed away at the tragically young age of 47 in his home of Belfast- during a particularly violent period of “the Troubles”- a few days later Stein received a letter from Tully written from his death bed- thanking Stein for the “lesson” he taught him that day in 56 and “proving to everyone that bigotry is for fools” with his all conquering side before admitting he was always too proud to apologise in person and always regretted it before ending the letter with a request for Stein to carry his coffin at his funeral.

Stein was only to happy to accept, however the infamously brutal Northern Ireland police force the RUC visited Celtic and warned them that no current or former players or managers were to travel to Belfast “under any circumstances” as they “couldn’t guarantee their safety” such was the profile of the club

But the legendary manager ignored their advice and risked arrest by secretly travelling to the funeral under a false name and, in a show of defiance even bringing along his young captain Billy McNeill, and showing respect to his old pal by carrying his coffin as requested. [FOUR LEAF CLOVER]

“Jock Stein was many things to many people; he was the man who stood with pickets during the miners’ strike of 1985 telling ‘scab’ drivers that they were doing good people out of a job. He was the man who stayed behind at Ibrox after the disaster of 1971 to tend to the injured and dying. He was the man who entered the crowded terraces at a Celtic away game to tell fans that there were enough good Celtic songs without adding politics or bigotry to their repertoire. And most of all he was the all-conquering manager who made a team born of an impoverished migrant community the best in Europe.” -

Im Internet kursiert wohl ein Video, das Lennon in ziemlich besorgniserregendem Zustand zeigt, anscheinend gestern in Carlisle (in England haben gestern die Pubs ja wieder geöffnet) und anscheinend ziemlich ĂŒbergewichtig und schwer angetrunken.

Zu dem feigen Idioten (offensichtlich ein Rangers Fan), der das gefilmt und anschließend im Internet verbreitet hat, hat Ally McCoist huete schon alles gesagt: Neil Lennon video slammed by raging Rangers legend Ally McCoist as a 'disgrace'
Man kann von dem Mann halten was man will, aber hier trifft er einfach den Nagel auf den Kopf.

Aber um Lennon muss man sich wohl echt Sorgen machen! Gerade mit seiner Vorgeschichte was mentale Gesundheit angeht ist sowas echt kein gutes Zeichen. Ich habs glaub ich schonmal geschrieben, auch vor dem Hintergrund war es einfach verantwortungslos, die Saison mit ihm so lange einfach laufen zu lassen, der zunehmende Druck und die Anfeindungen auch aus den Reihen der Celtic Fans haben ihm mit Sicherheit nicht gut getan. Ich hoffe einfach er hat Leute in seinem Leben die das im Blick haben!

Ich habe das Video nicht gesehen, aber was Du da schreibst klingt nicht gut.

NEIL LENNON ON LAST SEASON

"Speaking to the players the next day (after the League Cup loss) they were really disturbed and upset by that.

"Literally upset by it. That was the first cup defeat in 35/36 games. It was the end of an unbelievable cycle of success and for them to be treated that way was bewildering. They should have been lauded for it rather than abused.

"They were getting pelted with missiles. It was very sad. There was a new breed of supporters that I had nothing in common with and who believe the values of the club.

"They are the ones that are giving the club a bad name.

"It was definitely a situation like no other. You're going for the tenth title in a row and that was an obsession for the fans, an unhealthy obsession I felt. And we were in the midst of a pandemic where nothing was normal.

"So you put that together and there were a lot of things that were out of your control as a manager.

"I had nothing in common with those supporters and the way they treated Dermot and Peter as well, shocking.

"Considering in December we had just finished off another treble, two months later you are out the door.

"The whole thing seemed joyless. There was no credit it for it. It was just 'yeah Celtic have won another treble, move on'. There was a lack of joy around the place and that was really difficult.

"You are in the game to enjoy it. It was all about the football but this season football took second place to a lot of things.

"I wouldn't say I was hurt, I was more bewildered by it and the lack of time and the lack of faith that people showed in me.

"It's basically fans I'm referring to more than anything else.

"I can walk away with 21 medals as a player and a manager, the first guy to do the treble as both a player and a manager. If that doesn't mean a lot to other people, it means a lot to me."

"People say 'he's not that good' or 'he's a dinosaur'. A dinosaur at 49 is strange. Eighteen months ago I beat Lazio in Rome, the first Celtic manager to do that.

"It's about changing the public's perception but then again it's not really their perception I want to change it's the owner, chairman or chief executive of a club.

"Does it grate on me? Of course it does. It's just absolute nonsense. I'd just won a treble so if I'm a dinosaur what does that make all the rest? It's not like we played route one football.

"We were flexible with changes, we could play a diamond or a back three or 4-3-3, I had young coaches like John Kennedy, Damien Duff and Gavin Strachan who were very forward thinking and our coaching methods were all geared for the modern player.

"It's just a throwaway remark that is just completely untrue. Young dinosaur! T-Rex!"

Man hört da eine Menge Verletzung und EnttÀuschung raus. Was ich in gewisser Weise menschlich auch nachvollziehbar finde, trotzdem tut er sich mit so einem Interview aus der Emotion heraus keinen Gefallen, es wirkt einfach sehr unreflektiert und wenig selbstkritisch.

Ich fand ja auch, dass die Fanproteste nach dem League Cup Aus gegen Ross County unschön ausgeartet sind, aber es jetzt so hinzustellen, als wĂ€ren die Fans die Hauptschuldigen an der Misere des Clubs ("They are the ones that are giving the club a bad name") geht doch meilenweit an den tatsĂ€chlichen Verantwortlichkeiten vorbei. Und auch, dass die Spieler danach in erster Linie eingeschnappt waren anstatt mal die eigenen Leistungen zu hinterfragen sagt finde ich eine Menge ĂŒber den Zustand dieser Mannschaft in der letzten Saison aus, mir fehlt da einfach die Selbstkritik und stattdessen bestĂ€tigt es nochmal sehr den Eindruck, dass man sich viel zu sehr auf den vergangenen (unbestreitbar großen) Leistungen ausgeruht hat.

Genauso der immense Druck in Bezug auf 10iar ("that was an obsession for the fans, an unhealthy obsession I felt"). Da mag durchaus etwas Wahres dran sein, aber Lennon selbst hat diesen Hype noch im Mai 2020 nach der letzten Meisterschaft selbst massiv befeuert:
'We're going for 10 in a row': Neil Lennon issues rallying call for Celtic title record after claiming his 'best' Premiership crown yet
"Going for the ten; it's historic, it's momentous and very special. We'll be going all out to do that."

Und schließlich seine Verteidigung gegen den Vorwurf ein taktischer Dinosaurier zu sein. Erneut irgendwo nachvollziehbar, aber kommunikationstechnisch einfach ungeschickt. Es ist doch eine absolute Binsenweisheit, dass man solche VorwĂŒrfe nur aufwertet, wenn man sich dagegen verteidigt, gerade wenn er sie fĂŒr absurd hĂ€lt hĂ€tte er einfach dazu schweigen und seine angefĂŒhrten Erfolge fĂŒr sich sprechen lassen sollen.

Meiner Meinung nach war Lennon nie ein Trainer, der in erster Linie ĂŒber das taktische geworkt hat sondern in erster Linie ein Motivator war. Das ist ihm ĂŒber die Coronapause vollkommen verloren gegangen und ich denke hier liegt auch der eigentliche SchlĂŒssel. Er selbst sagt: ""The whole thing seemed joyless [...] You are in the game to enjoy it. It was all about the football but this season football took second place to a lot of things." Diesen Eindruck hat er seit Saisonbeginn schon gemacht und unter diesen Voraussetzungen konnte ein Trainer wie Lennon einfach nicht mehr funktionieren. Leider hat er das aber nicht selbst erkennen und von sich aus frĂŒh genug die Reißleine ziehen können, das hĂ€tte uns allen und vor allem ihm selbst glaube ich einiges ersparen können.

Stimme da absolut zu, Gollum.

Da fehlt einfach auch ein bisschen Selbstkritik.

Lennon hat viel fĂŒr den Verein geleistet, keine Frage. Aber alles, was ihn eigentlich ausgemacht hat als Trainer, das waren fĂŒr mich seine MotivationskĂŒnste und die Entdeckung guter Spieler. Beides hat in der letzten Saison null funktioniert. Im Endeffekt haben Lawwell und er was den Kader betrifft einen Scherbenhaufen hinterlassen. Die guten Spieler werden wohl fĂŒr wenig Geld gehen bzw. sind schon weg (Frimpong, Gordon etc.).

Lennon haut mal wieder einen raus.

Keine Ahnung, ob er noch versteht, was los ist. Aber ich denke, wenn er seinen Legenden Status nicht komplett verlieren will, sollte er langsam mal nach vorne schauen und sich nicht mehr um Dinge kĂŒmmern, die ihn nichts angehen.

Zusammengefasst: Die neue Generation an Fans sind Erfolgsfans und drehen frei, wenn es mal keinen Titel gibt.
Und die Titel gab es nicht, weil die Einstellung der Spieler nach dem Lockdown hinĂŒber war und einige weg wollten.

Vielleicht sollte er mal zurĂŒck schauen... Welch ein erhabenes GefĂŒhl als Fan es frĂŒher war, wenn man wusste, dass die Mannschaft sich zerreißt. Da spielt es auch eine untergeordnete Rolle, wenn man mal Zweiter wird. Wo sind sie hin, die Larssons, Hartsons etc., die mit Leib und Seele dem Verein dienten und nicht nur ihrer Karriere... Da ist nicht mehr viel. DAS ist das, was die Fans Lawwell vorhalten. Dass die Möglichkeit, sich mit dem Verein zu identifizieren, immer weiter absinkt. Dass es nur noch darum geht, Spieler mit Profit zu verkaufen und gute Bilanzen zu schreiben. Klar, gehört dazu, aber wenn sich in jeder Saison bald ein weiterer Spieler "wegstreikt", dann ist das nicht mehr mein Verein und so denken wohl auch andere.

So sehr ich ihn als Spieler und am Anfang als Trainer mochte, man muss leider das Fazit ziehen, dass er das alles nicht versteht. Und sich mit jeder weiteren Äußerung weiter ins Abseits stellt...

Bertie is being well cared for at his own home, surrounded by all the family.

Everyone at Celtic would like to add their best wishes to Bertie and his family. Bertie is a true Celtic icon, one of our greatest sons and someone the Club and our supporters love and respect dearly.

Neil kann einfach net verstehen das er ein großer Faktor fĂŒr das beschissene letzte Jahr war, purer disrespect gegenĂŒber Ange
