Southampton goalkeeper Artur Boruc has signed a new two-year deal at St Mary's to keep him there until 2015.

The 33-year-old Poland international's original deal was set to expire in June but he has agreed terms over an extension.

After being drafted into the side for their New Year's Day draw with Arsenal, the former Celtic keeper has started Southampton's last 15 games - only four of which have ended in defeat.

Di Canio: There will always be room in my heart for Tommy

To team-mates it was a trifling affair. The kind of bust-up liable to occur on any training ground on any given day. Yet so far as Paolo di Canio was concerned, a footballing slight had been delivered.

Celtic's Barrowfield training ground was the venue. And the late Tommy Burns was about to discover just how volcanic his new Italian signing could be.
Moments earlier, goalkeeper Gordon Marshall had failed to deliver the ball to a screaming di Canio.

It was one of the many flashpoints which pockmarked his early days at Celtic. One which taught both Burns and, by his own admission, di Canio a lesson in how to manage a major football club.

With a glint in his eye, the Italian reclined at Sunderland's training ground yesterday and recalled the moment he bonded with one of his greatest managerial influences.

'After a few weeks, I had a confrontation with Tommy because I was upset in a training session,' he said. 'And I was ready to leave. But he came to me and hugged me like a brother with energy that was an inspiration for me. And, to be honest, sometimes I think about that.

'He was like my older brother, he made me feel like a part of the family.'

And yet the path of true love never did run smooth. It was rutted throughout a tumultuous season by rows and discord.

After three or four months at Celtic, di Canio called an impromptu meeting in the players' lounge at Parkhead. The evening before, Celtic had been knocked out of the League Cup by Hearts at Tynecastle after extra-time.

Andreas Thom, the club's German striker, had declined the opportunity to pass to di Canio. Had he done so, the winger would have been through on goal. But Thom believed he was offside.

So it was, then, that di Canio summoned his Italian translator to the team meeting to convey his thoughts on the matter to the German with some force as bewildered team-mates looked on. Pierre van Hooijdonk - a dressing-room ally of Thom - backed up his friend.

Jorge Cadete, meanwhile, believed di Canio had a fair point. The era of the Three Amigos was in full swing and, for Burns, a young manager under pressure to halt Rangers' march to 9-in-a-row, managing the madness within the genius was a constant, unenviable balancing act.

'I never forget when I moved up there with my wife and daughter and nearly every day Tommy would come to my house at four or five o'clock,' di Canio recalls. 'Even though he lived far from my house, he would knock on my door and speak to my wife and me.

'We didn't really speak a word of English, but we communicated without any problem and he said if you need any help or need to go anywhere, my wife can help you.

'For me, it was something new because it never happened in Italy.'

After signing for ÂŁ650,000 from AC Milan - he had insulted Fabio Capello in savage terms during an end-of-season tour weeks earlier - Burns showed di Canio around Celtic Park.

The new Bhoy required an atlas to discover where Glasgow actually was and, at the start, the two men had substantial communication problems. 'Whenever there was a breakdown in communication, Tommy would start pounding his chest and saying "heart, heart",' said di Canio's biographer Gabriele Marcotti. 'That really resonated with Paolo and his way of thinking.'

It still does. Di Canio has been back at Parkhead just once since his departure for Sheffield Wednesday in 1997, citing a 'leetle problem'.

It was for the memorial game for Burns, a man he still regards as a major influence on his managerial style despite his death in 2008 through an aggressive form of melanoma.

'Of course, in some ways I am similar in the way I approach my players because he was always smiling and kind - but a determined guy and a good man who had time for his players,' the Sunderland boss said yesterday. 'I don't imitate Tommy - but we are very similar.

'I like to bring his mentality with the work ethic we have got. We work so hard and everybody knows they have to work hard, but they know I am there for them.'

Burns was there for di Canio during a series of battles with Fergus McCann. He was there for him the day the Italian dissolved in fits of hysteria and threatened to withdraw his services after failing to receive enough tickets for his family for an Old Firm game. He was even there for him when di Canio became the only Celtic player to request tickets for Scottish Opera's production of La Boheme at the Theatre Royal.

Player of the year during his one campaign at Celtic, di Canio's brilliance was widely recognised. Accommodating the maestro within the prima donna was key to the way Burns wished to play the game.

'There was a moment at Swindon when I received a text message from my player at four in the morning,' said. di Canio. 'He said: "Tomorrow I don't come in the training session".

'I am there for my players 24 hours - but I was half-asleep and didn't quite understand so I rang him and asked what was going on? He said: "Oh, I don't come to training".

'"OK, I come to you", I said - and I got in the car for an hour because we didn't live in Swindon and, at five in the morning, knocked on his door.

'This is how I think and that is what I remember of Tommy.

'Obviously I don't want my players to call me every single night, but it is my mission and Tommy and his family will always be in my heart, for sure.'

    Niall flourishing at Pittodrie Stadium
For most players, being told you are no longer good enough to play for Celtic Football Club can signal the end of a meaningful career. After all, signing for any other club in Scotland (outside of Rangers) is clearly a sign that your career is headed on a downward path and you are hardly likely to hit the big time again.
That’s exactly what looked like happening to ex-Derry City player Niall McGinn after Celtic loaned him to English League One club, Brentford and then didn’t renew his contract. However, a new contract offer from fellow SPL club Aberdeen, a desire to remain in top flight football and a manager who was prepared to take a chance on him has rescued McGinn’s career.
Not only is he a regular in the Aberdeen side but he’s also their top scorer and the player that opposition sides see as the biggest threat, the icing on the cake for Niall has been his nomination for player of the year in Scotland.
I don’t expect McGinn to actually win this accolade but it’s still an incredible achievement to be one of four players nominated by your fellow professionals in the Scottish Premier League.
McGinn is a genuinely nice guy with no airs and graces and stands as a role model to young players who get knocked back in their careers. He has showed the type of spirit so often missing in today’s players and like everybody else in this part of the world I’m delighted for him.

Wirklich eine tolle Entwicklung, die er bei den Dons genommen hat! Hoffentlich bleibt er der Liga ĂĽber den Sommer hinaus erhalten!

Aston Villa’s Stiliyan Petrov announces retirement

    In full: Stiliyan Petrov statement:

I’ve never been a person for making grand statements. I’ve only ever got on with my job, while remaining grateful to have great team-mates, great people around me and, most of all, a fantastic family. They have been powerful pillars of support when I have needed them most over the past year. To my wife, Paulina, and my sons, Kristiyan and Stiliyan, I love you very much and I will always for your constant love and support. Also to my mum and dad, my brother and Paulina’s mum and the people who have been closest to me throughout this time - you know who you are and I love you all. Each and every day I thank God for giving me the opportunity to still be with my family.

Football has been the other great love of my life, so it is with a heavy heart that I am announcing my retirement from the game. The emotions are overwhelming really, but the continued support of family, friends and the great people I have come to know will make it easier for me to move on from the only life I’ve ever known.

That I am ready to embrace new challenges will make this process much easier. Since being diagnosed with acute leukaemia in March 2012, I have come to understand and appreciate the way in which this disease impacts the lives of so many people. I can help and I want to help and, in setting up a foundation to help address the issues involved when people are diagnosed with this illness, I hope to make a difference. This will be my new challenge, one I will face with all the enthusiasm, energy and drive with which I have faced every single challenge.

I remember when I was a young player at CSKA Sofia and the good life was all I was interested in. Celtic came in for me and I moved to Glasgow, to another country, to a new world. I didn’t speak the language and I thought it would never happen for me. I knew nobody.

Fortunately, I met people who helped me to turn my life around. I came to know great teammates who showed me the proper way, the way I had to be if I was going to be a serious professional and compete at a high level. I came to appreciate so much the opportunity to work with that level of professional people because it made me something like them. At Celtic Football Club and at Aston Villa Football Club I was privileged to live a life competing at a high level and playing the game I love, supported by the most passionate fans.

Then something crazy happened, something I thought was just a cold but turned out to be something more serious, something life-changing. I played 90 minutes for Villa against Arsenal at The Emirates and I felt fatigued, not myself at all. But I thought it was nothing serious. The diagnosis by Dr Richard Lovell was a complete shock.

Around 7,600 people in the UK are diagnosed each year with leukaemia and about 2,300 people with acute leukaemia. Fortunately, I was able to make decisions very quickly and I started my treatment quickly. I needed to. My leukaemia is now in remission and I have finished my high intensity treatment. From now on I’ll be on the softer treatment, which is two years on tablets. I feel lucky. Not everyone is as lucky as I have been.

For this I need to thank Professor David Linch at University College London Hospital, his PA Teresa Macdonald and all of the nurses and staff at that wonderful institution. Thank you also to Professor Charlie Craddock, Sandeep Nagra and all of the nurses who have looked after me at University Hospital and Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham.

For the life I’ve lived in football, I will always be incredibly grateful. For the opportunity this crazy thing that happened in my life has given me, I also feel grateful in a strange kind of way. This crazy thing, somehow, has touched people and I want to try to channel this in a positive way. This will be the greatest challenge of my life.

I wish to thank the fans of Aston Villa and the Villa chairman, Randy Lerner, chief executive Paul Faulkner and manager Paul Lambert, also the fans of Celtic, the Bulgarian fans and fans of football all over the world who have helped me through the past year with their incredible displays of support and with their personal, moving messages. I would also like to thank all of the managers I have worked under and all of the team-mates I have played alongside. I loved playing football with all of you and you will always remain in my heart. Also to the agents who represented me, including my current agents Base Soccer. I am moving on and I am excited by this. There is a deep joy in my heart because of what you have shared with me, not only in this past year but over the years I have been in football. I felt privileged. I still do. I always will.

Good luck and all the best Stan! :celt5

McGeady legts anscheinend darauf an, Russland so schnell wie möglich zu verlassen:

Long term David Moyes target, Aiden McGeady is on his way out of Spartak Moscow after a major bust up with his club.
Back in January both Everton and Wigan failed with ÂŁ5m bids to tempt him away but now the record ÂŁ9.5m Scottish export has burnt his bridges.
The ex Celtic flying winger has been given a six game ban for near causing a riot! McGeady was sent off on Sunday for striking an opponent and making an offensive gesture to the crowd as he left the pitch which incited the home supporters, he then went and kicked down the dressing room door. He has scored Moscow's goal in their 2-1 defeat.
The Russian Football Union's disciplinary committee reviewed footage of the incident in the Russian Premier League fixture and issued a four-match suspension for his clash, plus a two-game ban for his behaviour after being shown the red card.
Spartak are not happy and neither is McGeady. He wants out, wants to play in the Premiership and is willing to take a pay cut - sounds perfect for us.

    Hamilton Accies sign ex-Celtic striker
Hamilton Accies have swooped to sign striker James Keatings on a one-year deal following his release from SPL champions Celtic.
Having impressed during pre-season training, in which he has scored twice in games, Keatings agreed the deal with Accies yesterday (Wednesday).
