Celtic boss Neil Lennon confirms bid for Aiden McGeady

Celtic manager Neil Lennon has confirmed there is "a big offer on the table" for winger Aiden McGeady. McGeady, 24, has been linked with a move away from the Scottish club and last month was reportedly the subject of a ÂŁ8.3m bid by Spartak Moscow. Lennon said he was unsure whether the Republic of Ireland international would leave before the start of the season. "There's strong interest, not just from Moscow. We believe there's interest from other clubs as well," he said. McGeady, who signed a five-year deal in 2008, was absent from Celtic's Champions League qualifying defeat by Braga in midweek. But he travelled with the rest of the squad to London for this weekend's Emirates Cup. Celtic say McGeady has been recovering from thigh and back injuries but trained on Thursday ahead of the challenge games against Lyon on Saturday and Arsenal the following day.Lennon said he had not asked McGeady a direct question about his intentions. "I haven't really sat down and said: 'are you away?', or 'do you want to go?' or anything like that because I don't want to put unnecessary pressure on him," the Celtic boss added.

Lennon said McGeady had proved an important player for Celtic who would grace any league in the world. "He's a big player for us and he has been for a number of seasons," he added. "He was very important to me in the run-in to last season. He's a talented player, a very talented player. But every player has his price and sometimes we can't stand in the way of that. "If the offer's right for the club and right for the player then it's hard to stop these things going through." Meanwhile, Lennon said the club had not held talks with former Germany goalkeeper Timo Hildebrand. The 31-year-old is a free agent after his deal with Bundesliga outfit Hoffenheim was not extended this summer. And Celtic, who have missed out on England goalkeeper David James, are searching for a replacement for Artur Boruc, who has joined Fiorentina.

"Celtic are interested and that is very interesting for me," Hildebrand told Germany's Bild newspaper. Hildebrand rose to fame as part of the Stuttgart team which secured the Bundesliga title in 2007, but experienced a difficult 18 months in Spain with Valencia. He returned to Germany in January last year with a move to Hoffenheim, but is now looking for a new club. "There have been no talks as far as I'm concerned," said Lennon. However, he added: "We've only got one sort of consistent goalkeeper in Lukasz Zaluska and we need to get another one in. "We lost a superb goalkeeper in Artur Boruc so it's imperative that we replace him and the quicker the better." On James's move to Bristol City, Lennon said: "I do think he has more to offer at a higher level than the Championship - he is England's number one goalie and just played at the World Cup. "He would have been ideal for us in terms of his experience, presence and charisma, but these things happen in football. "But I don't think he's made a mistake, he's moved there for genuine personal reasons."

Aiden McGeady looks set to leave Celtic in the coming days

Celtic midfielder Aiden McGeady will fly to Russia on Tuesday for signing talks with Spartak Moscow.

The 24-year-old has been the subject of a ÂŁ9.5m bid by Spartak and Celtic boss Neil Lennon admits he may have played his last game for the club.

The Republic of Ireland winger will not feature in the midweek Champions League qualifier against Braga.

McGeady, who signed a five-year deal in 2008, is currently sidelined with a calf injury.

The winger has been struggling with injuries in pre-season but featured in the 2-2 draw against Lyon in the Emirates Cup on Saturday.

Lennon has praised McGeady for his displays for Celtic and said he would grace any league in the world.

Is Celtic's Aiden playing a game of bluff?

James Milner could make the switch from Aston Villa to Manchester City within days but it may come too late to free-up cash for Martin O'Neill to throw at Celtic to acquire Aiden McGeady.

While the above paragraph may contain more speculation than is wise, it highlights the possible link between a big transfer down south and Aiden's final destination. Currently, Spartak Moscow are the front-runners and Aiden is set to fly to Russia tomorrow (Tuesday) for signing talks.

However - and there is always one of those - anybody who has followed transfer "sagas" for any length of time will appreciate no deal is done until it is actually done and Aiden's plans to fly to Moscow could be more of an attempt to flush out interest in England than a genuine desire to play there.

In fact, the 24-year-old Ireland international was quoted yesterday as saying he was "not keen on moving to Russia" and that it would take "an enormous effort" to convince him otherwise. Given he has reportedly been offered ÂŁ40,000-a-week after tax, there's a fair chance his comments may be genuine rather than an "up your offer" tactic.

But if he is holding out for a move to England, Aiden is playing a dangerous game. While Aston Villa's interest appears genuine, there is growing concern among fans of the Midlands club regarding the amount of money Martin O'Neill has to play with, and whether American owner Randy Lerner has tightened the purse-strings after his big spending in recent seasons failed to secure a place in the coveted Champions League.

Even if James Milner joins Manchester City for an obscene amount, perhaps somewhere close to ÂŁ30million, O'Neill may refuse to offer Celtic more than ÂŁ7.5million (or a part-exchange involving Emile Heskey!) - ÂŁ2million less than Spartak Moscow have reportedly put on the table. Following Shaun Maloney's less-than-stellar time at Villa Park, it should also come as no surprise the Villa supporters are less than convinced about spending big money on McGeady.

Meanwhile, Neil Lennon has said Aiden may well have played his last game for Celtic - though did stress he believes the calf injury which kept the player out of Celtic's 3-2 loss against Arsenal yesterday is genuine. He also said he understood what Aiden was going through as he was in a similar position towards the end of his stint with Leicester City.

Aiden is under contract with Celtic until 2013 after signing a five-year deal in 2008. Contracts mean little in football apart from increasing value and it's hard to see him remaining in Glasgow for much longer, be it days or weeks. Whether Spartak Moscow convince Aiden to make the move to Russia - where the standard of football is superior to that in Scotland, to be fair - is difficult to predict.

But for the sake of his career, if Aiden is flying to Russia just to convince Aston Villa, or others in England, to make Celtic a big offer it better work. If not, he could end up playing in a country he doesn't want to be in, possibly wrecking his chances of ever getting the move to the Premier League he apparently wants.

McGeady missed Celtic's first leg 3-0 defeat in Portugal and it now seems the 24-year-old will not be cup-tied to Celtic in Europe this season.

Spartak's technical director Evgeniy Smolencev reportedly met with club officials in London while they were participating in the Emirates Cup.

The Russian giants are believed to have made a formal offer for the talented winger after initially making a verbal offer in excess of ÂŁ8million.

However, it remains to be seen whether McGeady will accept the club's lucrative terms as he is reportedly not keen on a move to Russia.

Wenn ich dann noch lesen muss, dass wir wahrscheinlich nicht die ganze Kohle vom McGeady Transfer ausgeben mĂĽsen, platzt mir die Halsschlagader. Lennon wird in der Times zitiert mit "I think we need a couple of areas to improve the squad but I don't think it will take all that money to do that."

Da fällt einem nix mehr zu ein. Verkaufen wohl Hinkel, Boruc, McGeady und McDonald und holen Spieler wie Cha, Mulgrew, Murphy.
Mal gespannt was sich da noch tut. Wenn die Huns sich den Jelavic angeln, dann Hut ab. Gezielt Geld für einen Topstürmer ausgegeben, während wir wieder Masse statt Klasse einkaufen. Na ja, mal abwarten. Ledley und Juarez scheinen ganz gut zu sein. Hinten haben wir zwar mit Zaluska einen absoluten Fliegenfänger drin stehen, aber dass macht den Bock bei so Krücken wie Loovens, Mulgrew und Cha auch nicht mehr fett.

hab ich aufgehört zu lesen und nur nach Zitaten Ausschau gehalten. Wundersamerweise war keines drin. Hier gilt wohl wie so oft, öfters mal in Gedanken ein "angeblich" anfügen.

Welche Spieler sollten denn deiner Meinung nach geholt werden? Gerne auch konkrete Namen. Klar, Torwart, LB,CB und Stürmer würden der Mannschaft mehr gut tun. Aber es ist noch viel Zeit um die Mannschaft zu stärken, nicht immer gleich die Flinte ins Korn werfen.

Wenn wir die Meisterschaft mit Kampf und Einsatzwillen holen, dann soll mir das mehr als recht sein. Für mich zählt nur das, die Art und Weise, ob wir X-Mal die anderen mit 4 Toren nach Hause schießen oder alle Spiele nur 1-0 gewinnen, das ist mir völlig egal. Und da NL keine Pokalspiele gewinnt, sondern nur Ligaspiele ( ) glaube ich daran, das wir dieses Mal den richtigen Spirit haben. Fakt ist nunmal, das die Ligaspiele, die NL gewonnen hat eher durch Kampf gewonnen wurden als durch spielerische Mittel.

Und kurzes Wort zu Jelavic: Wenn ich Rapid wäre, dann würde ich bei dem Angebot "2m+1m add-ons" kurz lachen und dann wieder auflegen. Und dann haben die noch nicht über das finanzielle Angebot an Jelavic gesprochen.

Auch wenn er beim HSV total versagt hat fände ich den jetzt nicht so schlecht. Die Frage ist halt was der kosten würde, der HSV hat letztes Jahr 6 Millionen für den hingelegt. Die waren damals schon zuviel und sind es heute erst recht.
Im Vergleich zu unserem derzeitigen Angebot wäre ich mit ihm für einen vernünftigen Preis einverstanden. Allerdings finde ich das der Schuh auf den Aussenbahnen wohl deutlich stärker drückt. Was passiert eigentlich mit Hinkel? Geht der zu Schalke, Rafinha wurde ja verkauft!
