your safety at celtic park
FOR the avoidance of doubt, Celtic Football Club today re-iterated and clarified its earlier message on standing at matches at Celtic Park.
It is vital that supporters understand this message is made solely on the grounds of safety - nothing else. It is not some âheavy-handed PLC messageâ to attempt to discourage atmosphere or to negatively affect supporters. It is, in fact, the direct opposite.
After repeated calls for a change in behaviour, the matter has been taken out of the Club's hands and is one which is rightly being treated very seriously by Strathclyde Police on behalf of the Stadium Safety Team.
We cannot stress this enough. If it is not addressed then, categorically, there will be sanctions taken against the Club.
Celtic Park has and always will be about atmosphere. We are proud to have one of the world's finest sporting venues here. The manager, the team, everyone at the Club sincerely values the atmosphere generated at matches - it is something we want and something which has characterised the Club and its supporters for years.
We value recent attempts to improve atmosphere at the stadium and indeed have been closely involved with supporters in ensuring the success of these.
However, the safety of our supporters is our priority. Celtic Park is an all-seater stadium and is designed to accommodate supporters on this basis. The stadium has no crush barriers to accommodate standing at matches and crucially, the gradient of the stadium is such that it does not allow for standing to safely take place. These are recognised safety standards.
The Club and the police do not make these comments lightly and we make them only on the grounds of the safety and protection of our supporters.
We should ask ourselves this: What if a surge of people occurs? What if supporters fall? What if there are injuries, or even worse. We all, therefore, need to do all we can to avoid the potential of these situations occurring.
Celtic manager Neil Lennon has also appealed for supportersâ assistance in this area and said: âThe support we get at matches is fantastic. We value the atmosphere which is generated at matches and it is vital in driving on the team.
"However, of paramount concern is the safety of our supporters. I want our fans to have an exciting, enjoyable and hopefully successful day at Celtic Park - but ultimately, we need our fans to be safe and to get home safely.
"For many years at the stadium we have achieved both - a great atmosphere in a safe environment. I know we can continue to make this happen.
âThis really is a serious matter and it is something we need to deal with. I ask all our supporters to listen closely to the requests of the Club and the police.
âI thank all our supporters for your assistance with this issue and, of course, for your ongoing support".
