Spirited young Celts progress in cup

    SFA Youth Cup
    Tynecastle, Edinburgh
    Sunday, October 21, 2012

    HEARTS…1
    (Carrick 45)

    CELTIC…2
    Atajic 76, Lindsay 80

CELTIC Under-20s staged a superb second-half fightback to overcome Hearts 2-1 at Tynecastle and progress to the next round of the SFA Youth Cup.

Trailing to Dale Carrick´s header, the holders showed their determination to mount a fourth successive defence of the trophy with a spirited comeback after the interval.

Bahrudin Atajic´s spectacular scissor-kick restored parity for the young Celts, and several minutes later substitute Jamie Lindsay completed the turnaround following an incisive passing move.

There were a number of changes to the team that had faced St Johnstone in the league earlier in the week as those on national service with their countries in the past fortnight returned to the reckoning.

That saw the likes of Stuart Findlay, Joe Chalmers, Marcus Fraser, Jackson Irvine and John Herron all take their place in the starting XI for the testing third round tie.

The opening exchanges were typically frenetic of a cup tie with little space afforded to either side, limiting creative opportunities.

It was from a corner that Celtic came closest to testing the Hearts goal when Herron was inches away from connecting with Chalmers´ delivery in the second minute.

But the young Hoops had Glenn Daniels to thank for keeping them on level terms as the goalkeeper reacted brilliantly to push Dale Carrick´s close-range effort wide of the post.

The hosts then passed up another decent chance as Jamie Walker fired over from a cutback from their next attack.

That sparked a response from the youths as Chalmers and then Lewis Kidd made enterprising bursts down the left but their crosses had no takers.

Coming forward from right back, Michael Miller saw a shot deflected over from distance but that proved to the only effort on goal in a frustrating first half for the visitors.

And on the stroke of half time the home side opened the scoring when Carrick bulleted home a header from a left-wing cross.

Tommy McIntyre and John Kennedy made a double change at the break with Denny Johnstone and Jamie Lindsay replacing Miller and Paddy McNally.

And the changes appeared to have the desired effect as the youths started the second half with intent and purpose. Herron immediately won a free-kick on the byline before the young Hoops won a succession of corners.

Celtic were now in the ascendancy. Lindsay fired over after being teed-up by Stuart Findlay, Herron nearly fastened onto a through ball and Johnstone´s deflected shot nearly looped over Jack Hamilton but the Hearts shot-stopper gathered at the second attempt.

Chalmers had been a constant thorn in the Hearts side with his overlapping runs down the left and two of his searching crosses narrowly evaded Johnstone as the Hoops upped the pressure.

And the home side´s resistance was finally broken in 76th minute. Lindsay sent in a deep cross from the right and Atajic found the far top corner with a spectacular scissor kick.

Now brimming with renewed self-belief, they completed the turnaround several minutes later as Lindsay buried a shot beyond Hamilton after a neat exchange of passes.

And the young Celts were in mood to surrender their hard-fought advantage in the closing stages as they comfortably held on for a superb win, testament to the character and spirit among the squad.

Young Celts fight back to draw with Aston Villa

A SUPERB second half comeback saw Celtic´s Nextgen side salvage a share of the spoils against Aston Villa to preserve their hopes of qualifying for the knock-out stages of the competition.
Trailing by two goals at the interval, the young Hoops rallied after the restart and deservedly reduced arrears through Daniel Devine´s own goal.

Defender looks to follow in Watt’s way

Marcus Fraser is hoping that Tony Watt can help throw open the door to the Celtic first team.

Watt was the talk of the town last Wednesday with his stunning goal against Barcelona but it didn’t come as a surprise to his former youth side team-mate.

Fraser and Watt helped Celtic to the u-19 double last season with Neil Lennon calling on both players- plus John Herron and Dylan McGeough- for bench duty in last week’s Champions League thriller.

“You just need to be patient and wait for your chance,” 18-year-old defender Fraser admitted. “Hopefully mine will come and I can take it in the same way as Tony.

“When I saw him running through on goal against Barca, I just knew the ball would end up in the net.

“I didn’t say anything to anyone, but I believed he would score. I’m delighted for him. He’s shown what young players can achieve.”

Despite sitting on the bench last week Fraser enjoyed the experience of watching Lionel Messi at close range.

Adam Matthews and co put the shackles on the world’s best player with Fraser enjoying the view from the dug out.

“You can’t ask for more than to see Messi up close,” the defender added. “I think he’s the best player in the world and he was only ten feet away from me.

“He didn’t have his best game at Celtic Park but it was still a pleasure to see him even though we stopped him from playing.

“I also came on against Real Madrid and that was another great experience. If that never happens again, then I can always look back on it and say that I played against them.

“But I’m not going to settle for that, I want to push on. I was up against Di Maria and, although we lost, we played well and proved ourselves against a great side.”

Fraser is on Scotland u-21 duty tonight in Portugal with a number of clubs believed to be looking to take him out on loan from Celtic in January.

    Under-20 Scottish Premier League
    Firhill Stadium, Glasgow

    CELTIC 1
    (Lindsay 13)

    INVERNESS CALEDONIAN THISTLE 1

AFTER a slow start to the match, with neither side having any chances on target, Celtic took the lead on 13 minutes. Collecting a cutback on the edge of the box, Lindsay curled a lovely ball over Ryan Esson and celebrated as it dipped perfectly under the bar.

With the Hoops in the lead they looked comfortable and continued to push forward. Paul Slane cut the ball back into the box for Patrik Twardzik, but his shot was blocked by the Caley keeper. Paul George tried to latch onto the rebound but went down inside the box and the referee booked him for what he deemed to be a dive.

A well worked training ground move was then executed from a free kick just after the half hour mark, and it was completed by Slane cutting the ball across the face of goal. Marcus Fraser was in a good position but couldn´t direct it into the net.

And after another good free kick six minutes later, Joe Chalmers went down inside the box. He didn’t get the foul but he stayed forward and sent a shot just past the post seconds later.

Chalmers looked just as sharp after the break curling an effort on goal. The cross came from Twardzik who did well to recover the ball but Esson pulled off a diving save to deny the left back.

Twardzik then followed that up with a diving header just past the post but Celtic were left to rue their missed opportunities when Caley equalised on 66 minutes. They sent a ball across the face of goal and when the Hoops couldn´t clear it, their attacker bundled it over the line.

Celtic responded to the equaliser and Slane came close, almost replicating Lindsay´s delightful first half curler. Substitutes Denny Johnstone and Paul McMullan also came close at the death but they were denied by the strong Caley backline.

The point, however, moves the young Hoops into second place, with two games still in hand.
