Celtic move for Dutch defender

eltic have made a bid for Groningen defender Virgil van Dijk.

The 22-year-old had an outstanding season for Groningen who finished seventh in the Eredivisie last season.

Brighton have been tracking van Dijk since Christmas time but have been unable to make a move due to uncertainty over the future of manager Gus Poyet.

Neil Lennon is keen to add a strong central defender to his squad with Thomas Rogne moving on and Efe Ambrose missing the start of the season due to his involvement in the Confederations Cup.

Van Dijk joined Groningen from Willem II in 2010 and would cost around ÂŁ1.8m due to having two years left on his contract.

Following increased speculation earlier today van Dijk’s agent Martin Henk Chin told Dutch tv: “It is true that a bid for Vigil has been made but I can’t say anything about the club.”

Groningen director Hans Nijland also confirmed that a bid has been made.

Van Dijk turned 22 earlier this month and has been capped by Holland at u-19 and u-21 level.

Nachdem die StĂĽrmersuche vorerst abgeschlossen scheint, steht nun allem Anschein nach ein neuer Innenverteidiger auf dem Programm:

Celtic are stepping up their efforts to sign a central defender and have turned their attentions to Cedric Mongongu, who plays at French Ligue 1 club Evian.

The 23-year-old former Monaco player has 10 caps for the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The Scottish champions are also interested in Virgil van Dijk, a Netherlands Under-21 international.
The 21-year-old moved to Groningen from Willem II in 2011 and is under contract for two more years.
Celtic manager Neil Lennon is searching for a new centre-half, with Thomas Rogne moving on, Rami Gershon's loan expiring and Efe Ambrose missing the start of the season because of his involvement in the Confederations Cup with Nigeria.

GARY HOOPER wants to leave Celtic this summer because he believes returning to England will enhance his international ambitions.

Celtic have been linked with another central defender, Congolese international Cedric Mongogu. The 6’2’’ stopper plays for Evian in France’s Ligue 1, and has ten caps for his country. The 23-year-old can play in defence and central midfield, and his price tag is thought to be below £2 million.

Bzgl. Hooper: Mal schauen. Ich bin irgendwie nicht davon ĂĽberzeugt, dass er gehen wird. Hull etc. - das ist einfach nichts. Das kann ganz schnell zum Abstellgleis werden und die Karriere ruinieren.

Egal wie, letztens ging mir durch den Kopf, dass auch Balde und Stokes ein passables Duo bilden könnten für die SPL. Für die CL hätten wir dann halt keinen Knipser mehr, wobei Hooper jetzt auch nicht am Fließband getroffen hat in der CL.

BTW: Zu Lassad liest man immer wieder etwas in den Zeitungen. Dachte eigentlich, der wäre schon weg.

Southampton are set to kick off a bidding war for Celtic ace Victor Wanyama, having opened talks for a ÂŁ10 million transfer.
The Sun report that Southampton reached out to Celtic at the start of this week, keen to seal a quick deal. However, with their offer now public knowledge Celtic will hope that they can nudge other interested parties into moving closer to Neil Lennon’s £25 million valuation of his star player.
The 21-year-old Kenyan midfielder has been subject of near-constant speculation linking him to clubs across Europe. Arsenal, Stoke, Manchester United and Juventus have all been linked with moves for the midfielder.

Virgil van Dijk has called Celtic a “fantastic club”, after his current side Groningen revealed that he will be sold this summer.
The Dutch under-21 centre-half has been linked with Celtic since the weekend, and Neil Lennon’s side have placed at least one bid for the defender. van Dijk said that Celtic would be “a step up” from the Eredivisie, and that he is waiting for the teams to agree a deal.

Virgil van Dijk is set to complete his move to Celtic today, as the deal for the Groningen centre-half is finalised. The transfer had threatened to stall over Groningen’s established policy of securing sell-on fees when their young players leave, but it appears that all barriers to the deal have now been removed.
Groningen director of football Hans Nijsland said: “The deal is not yet complete, but we are getting close. I am just waiting for a call from the big boss at Celtic.
“We view (van Dijk) as one of the best defenders in Dutch football and we want to get the best deal for our club.” It is thought the Dutch under-21 cap will cost Celtic £2.5 million.

Wanyama’s worth £25m, says Tom Boyd
Tom Boyd has backed Neil Lennon’s £25m valuation of Victor Wanyama, as interest in the Kenyan midfielder mounts. The Hoops legend said that Celtic should hold out for “a lot more” than the reported £10m offered by Southampton earlier this week.
Boyd said: “He and Gary (Hooper) are two I would like to see stay, but Gary’s coming into the last year of his contract and there’s the risk he’ll leave for nothing.

Wenn wirklich mehrere Vereine noch ins Rennen einsteigen, wird der Preis steigen. AuĂźer der Deal mit den Saints ist schon ziemlich fix.

CELTIC last night agreed a record-breaking ÂŁ10million-plus fee with Southampton for Victor Wanyama.

As exclusively revealed in SunSport this week, Saints are in pole position to land the Kenyan powerhouse.
We can confirm Celtic have officially granted Wanyama, 21, permission to talk to the Premier League side.
Wanyama admitted last night that he is weighing up a megabucks move — with just personal terms to be thrashed out.
He said: “Yes, my club has agreed terms with Southampton, but I will also have to agree to terms before I consider myself a Saint. The deal is far from being complete.”
Arsenal, Cardiff, Stoke, Galatasaray and Inter Milan are among several clubs also interested in the Hoops’ prized asset.
But Celtic chiefs see no reason why the Saints deal won’t be completed.
