I was truly amazed at the crowd at the game last night. As a fervent fan of Manchester United for many a year, I have seen the Celtic supporters up close a few times down the years - yet I’m always gob smacked by their devotion and involvement in their club. I watched in awe last night as over 55,000 of them turned up for what was simply a kick about between former players and celebrities, and yet they created an atmosphere that I reckon must be un-rivaled anywhere else in the world. As a season ticket holder at Old Trafford, I would love if we could create the noise and passion at our ‘real’ matches that those folk created last night. I salute each and every one of them for their support for their club and such a worthy cause. Also a special word of praise to John Kennedy, whose testimonial it was. I never saw the lad play, but to donate his monies from the gate receipts says a lot about the lad. Good luck to him, to Celtic and its wonderful support for the future. A Manc!!

And as a Lisbon Lion, the answer is probably obvious, but what is your enduring highlight of your Celtic career?
That was such an iconic game for Celtic. At that moment we stamped Celtic Football Club’s name in history, not just in Scottish history but in European history. As soon as we won that game and showed people that a team outside of the Latin countries could win, and apart from AC Milan two years later, for the next 17 yeas all the winners came from northern Europe. It seemed we had been the catalyst for this amazing transformation. When you see it in those terms it was a wonderful game to be involved in and it’s amazing that 44 years later I still get stopped in the street, asking how it was to run out in Lisbon.

Former Celt Stan Petrov has been diagnosed as suffering from acute leukaemia.

The shock news was revealed by Aston Villa in a statement on the club website this afternoon.

Petrov was signed by John Barnes in 1999 and left Celtic in 2006 to link up with Martin O’Neill at Villa Park.

The Bulgarian won every domestic honour with O’Neill at Celtic and starred in the clubs run to the UEFA Cup Final in Seville alongside the current management team of Neil Lennon, Johan Mjallby and Alan Thomson.

The Villa statement read: “The Villa Board received news today that our long-standing captain Stiliyan Petrov has been diagnosed with Acute Leukaemia.

“Stiliyan developed a fever following the Arsenal game last Saturday and subsequently underwent tests conducted by Dr Ian McGuinness.

“Haematology experts confirmed the diagnosis today.

“We expect to learn more about Stiliyan’s situation in due course and we have moved quickly to support him and his family.

“During this time we ask that Stiliyan’s privacy is placed ahead of all inquiries and trust that we will share information as we receive it.

“Stiliyan is cherished by many and he will get from Villa every ounce of love and support that we have to help bring this to a positive conclusion.”
