Celts as U17s beat Dynamo Kiev 3-2 in Spartak Cup, but U20s lose 2-0 to Al Ain in semi-final of Emirates tournament

CELTIC Under-17s made it two wins on the spin in the Spartak Cup after a well-deserved 2-0 victory over Benfica in Moscow.

Defender Fiarce Kelleher fired the young Hoops into a first-half lead before Paul McMullan – who struck a hat-trick in the youths´ 3-2 triumph over Dynamo Kiev on Thursday – added to his glut of goals in the competition by converting from the penalty spot after the break to seal the three points.

Having shared the spoils with the tournament hosts and narrowly losing to Barcelona, the young Celts have now picked up maximum reward from their last two outings in Russia.

And Professional Academy Manager, Tommy McIntyre, told the official website of his satisfaction at the performance and final outcome.

"It was a fully-deserved win against a very good and physical Benfica side," he said. "We started the game with five U16 players and managed to get a great result. It was a hard-fought but well-earned three points."

Celtic’s u-17 side face Spurs today in the final match of the Spartak Youth Cup in Moscow.

A win against the Premiership side would guarantee second place for Celtic with Barcelona three points ahead and assured of top spot after being Celtic 1-0 in the second match.

Since then Celtic have beaten Dinamo Kiev and Benfica with Tommy McIntyre delighted by the strides that the squad has taken over an intensive week.

“We’re looking forward to playing Spurs and go into the game confidently after two good wins against Kiev and Benfica,” the Celtic coach explained.

“Against Benfica we started with five u-16 players, that’s asking a lot of them but the older players really helped them through the match, they all benefited.

“The players are maturing quickly. We work them hard in training, it takes a bit of time for things to get through, we have to be patient but we can see them taking things on board and developing.

“All that we can ask for is that the players improve and we’re seeing that all the time. This is the first steps in their development into the professional game. They have worked hard and are getting the benefit in their results.”

Most tournaments involve a final but with six top clubs invited Spartak habve settled for a round-robin format.

“It’s been a great tournament, playing one game every day can be tough going but everyone has benefited.

“The final day sees us playing Spurs, Dinamo Kiev meet Spartak Moscow and Barcelona play Benfica so there’s everything to play for in these games.

“It’ll be three good games and our squad are looking forward to playing Spurs after facing the continental sides.

Young Celts return from Moscow with pride
CELTIC´S Under-17 squad began their journey home from Russia today, (Monday), after a successful week taking part in the Spartak Cup. They youths finished second, narrowly missing out to Barcelona who were crowned the winners after Sunday´s last round of fixtures.
Tommy McIntyre´s side finished equal with the Catalan youngsters on points, and had a greater goal difference, but lost out because of their head-to-head result, having lost 1-0 to Barca on Wednesday.



Kann sich doch als Ergebnis absolut sehen lassen, Barcelona ist ja nun auch nicht irgendwer im Jugendbereich. Aber was bei uns in der nachwuchsabteilung inzwischen geleistet wird macht wirklich Hoffnung für die Zukunft! Vor allem auf Paul McMullan und Luke Donnelly bin ich echt gespannt in ein paar Jahren, von denen hört man wirklich sehr vielversprechendes.

Ja, Pyros, Sitzschalen als Wurfgeschosse und am Ende ne Pitch Invasion, da haben einige die Bühne abseits der ersten Mannschaft wohl auf ihre Art genutzt. Ist halt ein zweischneidiges Schwert, wenn man gleichzeitig gegen die Kriminalisierung von Fußballfans in Schottland kämpft...
Auf dem Feld ging es aber wohl auch ordentlich ab, und die Niederlage war am Ende schon sehr unglĂĽcklich mit mehreren PfostenschĂĽssen!

DESPITE a spirited and hard-fought performance, Celtic's Under-17s were beaten 3-2 in the Glasgow Cup final against Rangers. The young Hoops took the lead through Paul McMullan but Ryan Hardie drew the sides level again before Junior Ogen netted a double. McMullan bulleted home a screamer midway through the second-half but it wasn’t enough to complete the comeback.
