Slane on target for Development Squad

By: Laura Brannan on 11 Jul, 2012 00:02

PAUL Slane marked his comeback to Celtic, and his return from injury, with a goal for the Development Squad in their 3-2 win against Concordia Chianja.

The Hoops faced the Romanian Premier League side last night, (Tuesday), and the former Motherwell scarlet got his first run out since his loan spell at MK Dons last season, and the injury nightmares he has faced signing joining Celtic two years ago.

Morten Rasmussen and Bahrudin Atajic also got on the score-sheet to seal the first victory of their pre-season fixtures.

The Development Squad will play another closed-doors friendly on Friday before taking part in the Firhill tournament next weekend against Partick Thistle, Airdire United and an Everton XI.

Tony Watt did his top team prospects no harm in yesterday’s 4-0 development team win over Airdrie United.

The striker started pre-season in Germany with Neil Lennon’s first team squad and featured as a substitute against Augsburg and Kickers Stuttgart.

On Saturday he was back with the development squad alongside Lewis Toshney, Rabui Ibrahim and Andre Blackman as Celtic slumped to a 2-0 defeat to host club Partick Thistle.

Twenty four hours later Celtic returned to Firhill in the third place play-off with Watt showing no mercy to his old club as he led the line with conviction.

“Tony showed what he can bring to the team, he was a threat every time he went forward,” coach Stevie Frail admitted.

“We asked the strikers to work hard defensively, Morten (Rasmussen) was carrying an injury which he played through, but Tony put in a lot of donkey work defensively and that pleased me.

“He’s strong, holds people off and we’re working hard with him. He’s still raw and fairly new to the club, he’s doing the work that we’re looking for.

“He was involved in goals, scored one himself and could have had another. He’ll take a lot of confidence from that.”

The difference between the Thistle and Airdrie United performances was stark.

After a defeat managers and coaches often claim that they can’t wait to get back in action- in Frail’s case he had just 24 hours to wait between the matches.

Sunday’s win over Aurdrie was closer to the standards set at the club but Frail couldn’t hide his frustration with the display he had witnessed the previous day.

“We were disappointed by the Thistle match,” he explained. “Not so much in losing the game, you can accept that if you lose and the team has given a decent account of themselves but on Saturday we had to question their attitude.

“Although it’s only pre-season we shouldn’t be doing that- they just didn’t work hard enough.

“I was really pleased with the way that they played against Airdrie. There was a lot of tired lads after the match but it was good to get the Thistle performance out of our system.

“Against Airdrie they did everything that was asked of them. There was a purpose about them, we had a team talk at Celtic Park after our pre-match and the players went out and performed.”

With the first team squad in Holland and u-20′s in Portugal Frail had to dig deep to fill the bench against Airdrie but wasn’t short changed by the quality he discovered.

“We had to take Bahrudin (Atajic) off, his legs had gone,” Frail added. “He had put in a good shift and I pushed Glenn into right midfield although he’s more of a full-back.

“He did well to get a header onto a good cross from Joe Chalmers, it was a great leap and to put it back across goal and to guide it in at the post was excellent.

“It was great to see Glenn plus Mark Barrowman, who is only 15, and Ross Madden out on the park.

“They never travelled with the u-20 squad to Portugal so I’ve had them training for a week and their attitude has been spot on.”

CELTIC U20s…4

HAMILTON U20s...1

CELTIC Under-20s preserved their 100 per cent start to the season with an emphatic 4-1 victory over Hamilton at Firhill.

Patrik Twardzik´s spectacular strike put the young Hoops in charge at the break. A brace from Bahrudin Atajic and Denny Johnstone´s low drive extended their advantage in the second half.

Seconds after Stuart Findlay harshly saw red, the visitors scored a consolation in the final 10 minutes through an own goal. But the Bhoys saw out the rest of the game with ease to record their third win on the spin.

Having struck in both the opening fixtures of the campaign, Atajic was brimming with confidence and he was first to threaten following good work on the left by Lewis Kidd but the striker failed to connect with the cutback.

Jackson Irvine also looped a header towards the far post from a corner on the left as the young Celts made a brisk start to the game.

However, Hamilton with several first-team players among their side, could have opened the scoring when James Martin volleyed a cross over at the far post.

Clever play on the right from Twardzik then presented Atajic with a sight of goal and he forced the Hamilton keeper into a smart save.

Just before the half hour mark, the youths broke the deadlock thanks to a wonder-strike from Twardzik. The Czech attacker picked up the ball 30 yards out before unleashing an unstoppable effort into the top corner.

Buoyed by making the breakthrough, the young Hoops were playing some terrific stuff, and a sweeping, passing move across the pitch ended with Denny Johnstone firing over.

And another effort from distance, this time from Irvine, forced the Hamilton shot-stopper into an excellent save just before the interval.

They maintained their momentum after the restart as Darnell Fisher sent Irvine scampering through on goal, and although the midfielder beat the keeper to the ball, he couldn’t keep his effort on target.

However, shortly after, the youths doubled their advantage. Fisher was felled in the box after an enterprising run down the right and the referee pointed straight to the spot. Atajic took responsibility and squeezed his shot in the far corner for his third goal of the season.

In their next attack, the youngsters added number three as Twardzik fed Johnstone inside the box and he drilled the ball under the keeper from an acute angle.

It was one-way traffic now. On the hour mark, they scored their fourth. After a neat interchange on the left between Jaime Lindsay and Twardzik, the latter drove into the box before supplying Atajic who made no mistake with a powerful drive.

With 10 minutes remaining, Stuart Findlay was giving his marching orders for what the referee deemed to be a raised boot when making a challenge. It looked a harsh decision on the young defender.

From the resultant free-kick, Accies pulled a goal back when a Celtic player turned a cross into his own net. However, the ten men held on comfortably for a deserved three points

CELTIC (4-3-3) Fasan; Fisher (Henderson 70) McNally, Findlay, Waters; Irvine, Kidd, Lindsay; Johnstone, Atajic, P. Twardzik (Donnelly 72)
Not Used: Barrowman, Daniels, McManus, Kirwan

Richtig erfreulicher Abend heute. :top1

Young Celts beaten in bounce match

A YOUNG Celtic XI were beaten 2-1 by Blackpool in bounce match at Lennoxtown this afternoon.

The visitors opened the scoring around the 15-minute mark to lead at the break.

A trialist deservedly restored parity for the Hoops midway through the second half, finishing from close-range following a cut-back from the left. But the visitors struck the winner with a breakaway goal shortly after.

New Bhoy Lassad got a valuable 45 minutes of game-time under his belt following on from his late appearance as a substitute against St Johnstone on Saturday.

Rabiu Ibrahim was involved for an hour as he continued his comeback to full fitness, while new signing Lubos Kamenar played for 75 minutes between the sticks.

But, on the whole, it was a youthful side that took part, involving players from the U17 and U20 teams.

And their numbers increased in the second half as the likes of Robbie Thomson, Glenn Eadie, Liam Henderson, Connor McManus, Liam Donnelly and Jack Kirwan entered the fray from the bench.

Speaking to the official website, Development Squad coach, Danny McGrain, praised the performance of the youngsters

"I think the young boys who played today deserve great credit," he said. "They did magnificently well whether they came from the U17s or the U20s.

"It was a good exercise for Lassad who hadn´t a lot of game-time and I thought he did very well. He had a couple of half chances, created by Paul Slane and Paul McMullan. And I think he enjoyed it as well.

"As the game went on longer, Rabiu got into the game and made some nice telling passes.

"The winner was a cheap goal to concede particularly since we had more possession of the ball."

Atajic preserves young Celts' perfect start

CELTIC Under-20s preserved their perfect start to the season with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Aberdeen at Glebe Park.

Top scorer, Bahrudin Atajic struck the decisive goal in the first half, finishing off a clinical counter attack from the young Hoops.

From an Aberdeen corner, Lewis Kidd collected possession and sprinted the full length of the pitch before supplying the striker who made no mistake.

The victory was the young Celts´ fifth on the spin, and was more impressive given the difficult weather conditions in which the game was played.
