Celtic B team’s first Lowland League term as it happened
What started out as a quick and unexpected games programme from a young Celtic FC B team ended up a worthwhile experience in the Lowland League with some worthy performances, intense matches and great goals. With a playing team averaging around 17.4 years in age, the Bhoys finished up their first Lowland League season in third place on 73 points, netting 82 goals and with the second-best defensive record in the league.

Celtic B team Lowland League 2022/23 fixtures
The fixtures for the Lowland League 2022/23 season have been released and Celtic FC B will kick off their second year in the Lowland League with a home game against Cowdenbeath on Saturday, July 23 (KO 3pm). The young Bhoys will be looking to make a strong start to their season as they welcome league newcomers to Penny Cars Stadium after their recent relegation from League Two. The Hoops are back to full training and looking forward to the season ahead after gaining vital experience and having consistent game-time last season.

Celtic B team Bhoys extend contracts
There has been more signing action on the B team front with Joe Murphy and Magnus MacKenzie both extending their contracts with the Hoops. Ahead of the new 2022/23 season in the Lowland League, 19-year-old midfielder, Murphy who has been with the Celtic Academy for nine years has added another two years to his existing contract, while 17-year-old defender, MacKenzie, now in his fourth year with the club, has also upped his deal by another two years. The news comes hot on the heels of a number of Celtic Academy players signing their first professional contracts and they will be aiming to emulate both Joe Murphy and Magnus MacKenzie by furthering their professional careers with the Celts. All of the Bhoys are following in the footsteps of, not only Hoops skipper, Callum McGregor and his fellow long-term Celt and Scottish internationalist, James Forrest, but other more recent first-team Celts such as Anthony Ralston, Mikey Johnston and Stephen Welsh among others who have all trod the player pathway from the Academy to the first team. Everyone at the club wishes both Bhoys every success in their continuing careers with the champions.

Young Celts to represent Scotland in prestigious Premier League International Cup
Celtic are the only Scottish side taking part in this season’s Premier League International Cup, with the club’s Academy graduates representing our Celtic FC B team alongside and against a host of elite European sides who will be going head-to-head with the cream of England’s Premier League 2 renowned set-up. The Celts have been invited alongside names such as PSG, Monaco, Feyenoord and Valencia among others, with top English sides such as Liverpool, Manchester United and Arsenal all vying for success in the prestigious Under-21 international tournament. The competition sees 12 clubs from the Premier League 2 set-up, and 12 international clubs specially invited from around the continent split into three groups in which the four English clubs will play their international opponents, with the Group Stages scheduled to be played between September and February. The successful clubs, the top two teams from each group plus the two best third-placed sides, will then progress to the knockout stage with the quarter-finals due to be played by mid-March, the semi-finals by April and the final going ahead in May.

Celtic B held by Spartans in entertaining away draw
Celtic B put in a battling performance but couldn’t claim their first away victory of the season, playing out a 2-2 draw in an entertaining match against Spartans. The Hoops took the lead in the first-half from Bosun Lawal, but the home side equalised in the second with an impressive free-kick. Johnny Kenny looked to have given the Celts all three points with a fine goal 14 minutes from time, however, Spartans responded again with eight minutes to play to share the points in the Lowland League clash.

Thomson and Vata strikes seal three points for young Celts
Coming out at the break level, two second-half goals away to Civil Service Strollers gave the Celtic B side their first away win of the new Lowland League campaign. After a goal-less first half that saw Celtic come close on a number of occasions, it took the introduction of 16-year-old Corey Thomson as a second-half substitute to put the Bhoys ahead in the 67th minute. Shortly after, Rocco Vata made it two with a stunning left-foot finish to seal the win.

Club sends Tommy McIntyre best wishes as he leaves Celtic
Following changes being made to the coaching structure within the Club’s B team, Tommy McIntyre has left Celtic to pursue new opportunities. Tommy was the B team manager and in over 12 years’ continuous service, he oversaw the development and progression of many players within the Club, together with many successes for the B team. Tommy has left with the collective best wishes of all at the Club, and with our collective thanks for his commitment in his role.

Celtic B Team Update
Former Celtic stars, Stephen McManus and Darren O’Dea, will continue to lead the club in tonight’s B Team match against Livingston B at the Excelsior Stadium as former B Team manager, Tommy McIntyre moves on from Celtic. As announced last week, Tommy has left the club to pursue new opportunities, and Darren and Stephen, on a joint coach basis, will now continue to take charge of the stars of the future across the many challenges ahead including the Lowland League, the UEFA Youth League and the SPFL Trust Trophy. Reporting directly to Celtic manager, Ange Postecoglou, Darren and Stephen will be tasked with further developing Celtic’s young players, with the ambition of seeing them ultimately flourish in the Celtic first-team.

Darren O'Dea: UEFA Youth League is going to be a vital learning experience for the players
Celtic’s passage into the Champions League for the first time in five years means the Bhoys a rung down from the first-team will also be back in the UEFA Youth League and playing against the same teams as Ange Postecoglou’s men. Taking on Real Madrid at the Excelsior Stadium on Tuesday, with kick-off at 3pm, it’s an exciting opportunity and one that coach Darren O’Dea can’t wait for, to see how his side performs against some of Europe’s finest young players.
