Celtic set to make Swedish swoop

Swedish international Daniel Majstorovic is to undergo a medical at Celtic ahead of sealing a move to the club from AEK Athens. If the deal goes through, the 33-year-old will become Celtic's eighth summer signing. Celtic are looking to strengthen their central defence following the departure of former captain Stephen McManus to Middlesbrough.

"We've liked him for a while and obviously with Johan having his connections with Sweden, we have been able to entice him to Glasgow," said Celtic manager Neil Lennon.

CELTIC boss Neil Lennon is plotting a sensational loan swoop for Manchester City keeper Shay Given.

MailSport can reveal the Hoops have placed the Republic of Ireland star at the top of their wishlist of goalies.

And Given could be one of four players checking in at Parkhead as Lennon continues his rebuilding.

Scotland star James McFadden last night admitted he would like to join the Hoops from Birmingham.

And Celtic are closing in on the signings of Swedish stopper Daniel Majstorovic and Honduran left-back Emilio Izaguirre.

But what will really excite the fans is the move for Given. City boss Roberto Mancini dropped the 34-year-old for yesterday's 0-0 draw with Spurs.

Joe Hart started instead and Given now faces the prospect of more time on the bench after the Englishman's outstanding display.

It's understood he will hold showdown talks with Mancini tomorrow morning.

And Given looks set to ask for a loan - with Parkhead his preferred destination.

Arsenal also want to sign him but it's unlikely City will allow the player to go to a title rival.

If Given moves to Parkhead on loan it will seal a return to the club he joined as kid. Celts let him slip the net in 1994 when they made a mess of his contract renewal and he went to Blackburn.

Lennon has also been linked with a move for Given's frozen-out City team-mate Craig Bellamy.

But after yesterday's 1-0 win at Inverness in the SPL opener, the Hoops boss admitted there was no further progress on that move.

However, Lennon did confirm deals for Majstorovic and Izaguirre were nearing completion.

He said: "Majstorovic is here going through a medical so we're nearly over the line with him - and Izaguirre is in on Sunday."

As for Bellamy, all I can say is we're in the mix with other clubs."

If Celtic fail in their swoop for Bellamy then Scots star McFadden could be another option.

The 27-year-old is entering the last 12 months of his Birmingham contract, with the club yet to take up the option of another year.

And when asked if he would like to play for Celtic one day, Faddy said: "Aye. I've been away from Scotland for seven years but every six months or so a move to Celtic rears its head.

"I don't really know what's going to happen. But I'll come back one day. I'm proud of my roots.

"I'll definitely play in the SPL again - it's just a matter of when."

One player who looks set to leave Parkhead is Irish defender Darren O'Dea who is expected to join Ipswich on loan tomorrow.

Paddy McCourt was the Hoops hero yesterday as his stunning solo goal settled the game in Inverness.

But the winger could miss Thursday's Euro clash with Utrecht after suffering whiplash during a collision with Shaun Maloney as he celebrated his strike.

    Weiss targets Hoops move
    Slovakian starlet eyes loan switch

Manchester City winger Vladimir Weiss has revealed that he would love to join Celtic on loan.

The 20-year-old Slovakia international has been strongly linked with a move to the Hoops as Neil Lennon looks to further bolster his options for the new season.

City are reportedly not willing to let Weiss leave the club on a permanent basis, but could be open to sending him out on loan if an agreement can be reached.

He told the Daily Record: "I'd love to play for Celtic. It would be like a dream come true for me. The thing is, it's okay me saying I'd love to go to Celtic but it's not just up to me.

"Manchester City also have a say in where I go next. I need to speak to them and get their opinion of what is best for me.

"We trained on Sunday and I spoke to the manager. I told him there was interest from Celtic and I'd love to go.

"He told me to wait because he needs to speak to (football administrator) Brian Marwood but we should know more after that. I've got to wait and speak to the manager, things should be a bit clearer after that.

"I should find out on Monday or Tuesday morning. A few clubs have come in and tried to buy me but Manchester City said there's no chance of that.
    Playing time

"But they've said they will let me go on loan, it's just about the destination. They know I need to get a season where I play week in, week out and I think Celtic would be a great option.

"There are still a few more clubs who are interested so I'll have to speak to my dad because it's not an easy decision. But Celtic are a great club, a big club."

The Bhoys have also been linked with City keeper Shay Given, who lost his place in the side for the Premier League opener with Tottenham to Joe Hart.

Weiss is hoping a double switch can be agreed and is looking forward to finding out if a move will be possible.

"I know Celtic are linked with Shay as well," he added. "I'm not sure if City would let us go to the same club, we'll have to wait and see but that would be great.

"That's another reason I have to wait as Celtic are trying to get Shay as well so it might depend on that. I'm sure I'll find out on Monday what's happening.

"It could be an exciting move if it happens and I'd be really happy if that's how it turns out."

    Given wäre weit wichtiger.

Sky Sports News understands Craig Bellamy has not been granted permission to train with Cardiff City ahead of a possible move. The 31-year-old Welshman has been shunned by Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini and is thought to be close to agreeing a six-month loan switch to the Championship club. However, Italian tac...tician Mancini has not allowed Bellamy to link up with the Cardiff squad at their Vale of Glamorgan training ground, contrary to reports.

Bellamy wanted home, not Celtic - Lawwell

Speculation about where Manchester City's Craig Bellamy will move may be about to end following Celtic chief executive Peter Lawwell conceding defeat after the player indicated he wanted to move to Cardiff City.

Or are Lawwell's comments merely another stage in the increasingly drawn out transfer saga? It's impossible to tell, but if the suggestion Man City are only prepared to pay half of Bellamy's reported ÂŁ90,000-a-week wages while he is away on loan are true, where are Cardiff going to get the cash for the rest from?

Lots of questions - almost as many questions as clubs Bellamy is being linked to - but it would appear City do not want to sanction a permanent sale or loan Bellamy to a club they consider to be a rival. Whether such clubs are their real rivals (mid-table and a few places above) or just their pie-in-the-sky rivals (Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester United) is not clear.

The Scottish Sun quoted Lawwell as saying: "We agreed a deal with Manchester City and we had been talking to Craig for over a week. But at the end of the day, if you lose out to someone who wants to go home there's nothing you can do about it."

Lawwell also slammed the suggestion Celtic have not tried to sign so-called "big names", insisting it was a case of the players not wanting to play in the Scottish league in its current state. Even without the "marquee" signings, Majstorovic became the club's eighth signing of the transfer window yesterday and there are more to come.

Assuming Bellamy doesn't sign, the talk of James McFadden being the second-choice option is a little worrying. The rumour is McFadden will cost ÂŁ4million as although he only has a year left on his current contract, Birmingham have the option to extend it by a further 12 months.
