Scott Brown doesn’t want to see any cut price departures from Celtic.
With squad fillers regularly moving for £5m a time Celtic instantly dismissed Norwich’s bid for Gary Hooper.
More bids are expected over the remainder of the transfer window but it will take an offer close to ÂŁ10m to bring Celtic to the negotiating table.
Hooper will have the ultimate say in any deal, being at liberty to knock-back a move and could well opt to stay at Celtic till the end of the season rather than go through the upheaval of a January move when he has so much to play for.
Circumstances play a big factor in January deals with Liverpool signing Luis Suarez for a third of the Fernando Torres fee- but blowing ÂŁ35 on Andy Carroll.
Where Hooper fits in is anyone’s guess but the difference between SPL and Premiership is surely balanced up to an extent by Hooper’s Champions League record in the qualifiers and group matches.
“Everyone puts Gary down because he plays in Scotland for Celtic,” Brown observed. “If he was doing this week-in, week-out in the English Premier League, he’d be worth £15m or £20m.
“It’s hard the way people see Scottish-based players, but we are in the Champions League and doing better than a lot of the clubs down there. If it does happen for Gary, I wish him all the best, but I hope he stays.”
Brown added: “I understand why teams like Norwich are looking at him and it’s only a matter of time before someone else puts a bid in for him.
“Of course we want to keep him. It’s huge, as we have a big game against Juventus.”
