GARY HOOPER and Anthony Stokes got back in the goal routine to bail out sloppy Celts last night.

After two games of no chances and no goals, the Hoops pair finally spurred each other into life as their German tour came to an end.

Trailing 1-0 to the Bundesliga side, Hooper dragged Celtic back into it before Stokes hit the winner.

But it was giant keeper Fraser Forster who was the real hero with several fine saves to deny the Germans.

Kick-off at the Scholz Arena was delayed for 20 minutes after Celtic’s team bus got caught in traffic.

But it was the performance of the SPL champs that stalled in the first half.

Mikael Lustig started at right-back with Victor Wanyama also back in the side.

Lustig blundered in the first few minutes allowing Marcel Reichwein to steal possession, but Forster saved well. But shortly after Celtic were a goal down when Martin Dausch’s cross caught out the Hoops defence and Benjamin Hubner stabbed home.

Celts tried to respond and Kris Commons’ free-kick was perfect, but Wanyama couldn’t keep his header down.

Lustig continually got caught sleeping as Aalen exploited his slackness with Kevin Kampl driving at the Swede whenever he could.

After 31 minutes it was almost 2-0 when Reichwein’s shot shot stung the fingertips of Forster and smashed off the bar.

Robert Lechleiter was clean through on goal two minutes before the break, but again Forster came to Celts’ rescue with the save.

Hoops boss Neil Lennon must have been frustrated at the way his side was being picked apart so easily.

There’s always an element of the small team lifting themselves for a visit of a club like Celtic. But after almost three weeks of pre-season the Hoops should not have looked as rusty as this.

The second half kicked off with Scott Brown coming on for Beram Kayal, a change which immediately injected life into the side.

All of a sudden Celtic had a rhythm and the ability to string a few moves together.

They could have had a penalty after Charlie Mulgrew charged into the box only for Hubner to stick an arm out, but ref Felix Brych didn’t want to know.

One major positive Celtic can take from this tour of Germany has been the form and presence of Forster.

If Celts are going to negotiate the Champions League qualifiers the keeper will be a crucial factor in the next few weeks.

Right on the hour mark the giant Geordie gave another example of his ability with a brilliant one-handed save from Daniel Buballa.

Forster had been doing his bit and in 64 minutes his team-mates did theirs.

Dylan McGeouch had only been on the park a matter of seconds after replacing the shaky Lustig when his cross was poked into the bottom corner by Hooper.

Paddy McCourt was also thrown on in place of Wanyama and Mo Bangura got a chance, replacing Commons.

McCourt almost gave Celtic the lead after 71 minutes with a cute drive from the edge of the box.

Keeper Daniel Bernhardt spilled the shot, but Hooper was offside as he charged for the rebound.

Misfit hitman Darryl Murphy was the next player thrown on as Hooper made way with 17 minutes to go.

The changes seemed to working because shortly after Celtic were ahead.

Brown slipped a great ball to James Forrest, who immediately fed Stokes.

Keeper Bernhardt raced out, but the Hoops hitman kept his cool to slip the ball into the back of the net.

First tour win for Celts, now it’s on to Amsterdam for the toughest test yet against Dutch champs Ajax.

NEIL LENNON gave his dozy Hoops a half-time rocket to fire them to the first win of their pre-season tour.

Celtic boss Lennon was furious with his side after they trailed 1-0 at half-time in Germany.

But after his blast, goals from Gary Hooper and Anthony Stokes gave Celts’ victory.

Lennon said: “We started poorly and gave away a bad goal, but we haven’t worked on defensive set pieces yet, although that is no excuse.

“I gave them a bit of a rocket at half-time as some of them needed a wake-up call. You could see the lethargy lift in the second half. You can see a gradual improvement and in the second half we passed the ball really well.

“We were a lot better and we scored two great goals in the second half.

“We looked a lot brighter and it was good for the strikers to score.”

Honduran full-back Emilio Izaguirre hasn’t kicked a ball so far in pre-season because of a viral infection.

But Lennon insisted: “We are hoping Emilio will only be out for a few days and hopefully he will train on Thursday.”

The Champions League qualifier draw is on Friday and Lennon added: “There’s still nothing happening with transfers. But we are still short of a centre-half, and sorting that is a priority.”

ANTHONY Stokes slotted home the winner as Celtic came from behind to beat Aalen 2-1 in their final pre-season match on German soil.

The home side had initially taken the lead after just four minutes when Benjamin Hubner bundled the ball over the line from a free-kick. But a persistent Celtic came back in the second-half, firstly from a Gary Hooper tap in before Stokes slotted through the keeper's legs to take the lead.

Neil Lennon had made several changes to the side which lost to Stuttgart Kickers at the weekend and introduced two of the late comers to the squad, Victor Wanyama and Mikael Lustig, from the start.

But it wasn’t the best of starts for Celtic who went behind to a goal in the fourth minute. It came two minutes after Fraser Forster had blocked a shot with his leg and this time it originated from a free-kick. Despite the keeper blocking the initial shot from Hubner, the Aalen defender managed to bundle it over the line and Celtic's cries for offside were ignored.

The Hoops didn’t let their heads drop, though, and showed good movement in midfield. There was a clear improvement from the previous two matches on German soil and they pushed forward in an attempt to find an equaliser.

But after a good spell from Celtic, the home side came back into the game on 24 minutes when Mulgrew was forced to make a sliding block inside the box. Wanyama then thumped the ball out of play shortly after and Kelvin Wilson headed the resulting corner clear.

Aalen striker, Marcel Reichwein attempted a glancing header just before the half hour mark but it was an easy one for Forster to clear. And the keeper followed that up three minutes later with an excellent block from the same player, this time hitting it onto the bar.

James Forrest, who was looking one of the quickest and sharpest in the hoops, made a break away from an Aalen corner on 38 minutes and made a good run down the wing. Kris Commons couldn’t make the most of it, however, and sent his cross into the stand behind the goal.

Aalen had one more attack before the break but Forster came to the rescue again, this time blocking it with his legs. Wilson followed through by clearing the loose ball and Celtic went into half-time one goal down.

But they returned fighting and in the opening 15 minutes Celtic tried to push deep into Aalen's half. Their persistence paid off on 64 minutes when Hooper scored the side's first goal of pre-season, tapping it in at the far post.

The two substitutes, Paddy McCourt and Dylan McGeouch, linked well to send the ball into the box and the striker converted it from just a few yards out.

And the goal seemed to breed life into the Hoops as they charged forward in search of another. Substitute Mo Bangura looked energetic and eager to impress, and he was involved in the build up to Celtic's next chance.

This time McCourt unleashed an effort from the edge of the box, but Daniel Bernhardt in goal, blocked the shot. Hooper attempted to latch onto the loose ball but was ruled offside in the process.

The Hoops continued to dominate and found a second goal on 77 minutes, this time from Stokes. The Irishman had initially dummied the ball when Brown had played it into the box. Forrest collected it and played it through to the Irishman where he duly converted it though the keeper's legs.

With Celtic now in the lead they looked confident and in control. Aalen couldn't find an equaliser at the end and the Hoops closed the German leg of their pre-season tour with a victory. Next up for the Hoops is Ajax in the Amsterdam ArenA on Saturday, July 21.

Johan Mjallby: Celts preparing for Ajax

CELTIC assistant manager, Johan Mjallby, is now seeing the rigours of the pre-season training routine coming to fruition thanks to the Hoops’ second-half performance against VfR Aalen.

Following going behind to a scrappy fourth-minute opener, the Celts rallied and took the spoils thanks to two second-half goals from Gary Hooper and Anthony Stokes.

The Swede said: “I was pleased with the second half because for the first time on this trip we started passing the ball the way we should do and can do.

“It’s been a hard pre-season for the boys because we’ve been training them quite hard and that’s been more down to fitness.

“But from now on there will be more focus on football and now we need to get back to playing and passing the ball the way we know we can.

“So we were pleased to get the two goals by playing much more solidly and much more steadily in the second half.”

He said of going behind to the early goal: “At first we were frustrated and upset that they got such an easy goal from a set-piece and they got in very easily between our defenders.

“So that was a disappointing start, but from then on we didn’t really play in the first half.

“There was no real aggression and no momentum so we didn’t really pass the ball well.

“We had a quiet word with them at half time and we obviously wanted them to step it up a wee bit.

“We’ve been training them hard and they’re tired but they should be better on the ball. However, we’re happy and glad that they started to play a wee bit more.

“Now we’re going to ease off a wee bit in training and focus on the football more and hopefully that’s going to put us in good stead for the Ajax game.”

He added: “The Anthony Stokes goal was a beautiful goal and a great moment – we’ve got players who can do that but it’s just that we’ve been lacking a wee bit for the first couple of games.

“It was just great build-up play and a great goal. Even the first goal for the equaliser was a beautiful ball in from Dylan McGeouch and Gary Hooper was there to get the goal.

“They were two good goals and that was down to the football we played which was so much better in the second half.”

The game also featured the likes of Victor Wanyama and Mikael Lustig for the first time on the trip as they were afforded some extra time off following international duty over the summer – the Kenyan in World Cup qualifiers and the Swede in Euro 2012.

The assistant manager said: “Obviously, they haven’t had that many days in training so it was good for them to get some football.

“You can see with Victor that he doesn’t need much training because he was just brilliant.

“He’s a superstar in the making, there’s no question about that and it was good for Mikael as well to get some football in.

“It will be good for them because we need all the bodies we can right now and we don’t want to pick up any injuries

“We’ve got Georgios Samaras coming back into training as well now.”

He added: “We’re all looking forward to Ajax right now because that’s going to be a stern test for us

“They are a quality side and it is games like this one against Ajax that we need to play to see where we are really before we venture into European football and try to qualify for the Champions League.”
