Paradise is home from home for Johnny Kenny

Johnny Kenny needs no introduction to Celtic Football Club. Growing up amongst Hoops supporters in the west of Ireland, the 18-year-old is all too aware of the size and history of the club. So, when the call came from Celtic to try to bring him over to Glasgow, the striker knew the decision was a no brainer. After an impressive debut year with his hometown club Sligo Rovers in the League of Ireland, scoring freely in all competitions, Kenny is now raring to impress the Celtic support and he can’t wait to get his first taste of the Paradise pitch.
He said: “It feels amazing. Thankfully it’s over the line now and it’s time to get down to work and impress the manager and get in and amongst it all. I had a good season with Sligo and it was great to play there but when Celtic come in it’s a no brainer. It’s such a big club here and back home and so many of my family and friends support the club, so I couldn’t wait to get here. Coming from the Showground, it’s a lovely ground in Sligo and its home but when you come here it’s just something different. Playing in front of 60,000 fans at Celtic Park will be a dream come true at a stadium with such history. I’m looking forward to playing in-front of the fans and giving everything I have to keep the team winning and hopefully I can win a lot of trophies here. I’m a striker that likes to get in behind and press defenders. I bring massive work-rate to the team and hopefully I can score goals and get the fans on their feet.”
Signing a five-year contract, the Republic of Ireland Under-19 internationalist will train with Ange Postecoglou’s side, as he hopes to establish himself as a regular in the first team.
A number of youngsters have made their mark this season and Kenny says the manager’s belief in youth was an important factor in his decision.
“The manager was massive,” he said. “I was talking to him a few times before I came and it’s amazing the way he wants to play and what he thinks of me. The amount of young players he’s brought through here has been unreal and I hope I can play under him. I’ve signed a long-term deal so I want to come here, win trophies, score goals, get the fans on my side and win stuff here at Celtic Park and bring more success.”

Disappointed Johnny Kenny has opened up on the false start at Celtic and behind the scenes chats with boss Ange Postecoglou. The 18-year-old left Sligo Rovers to pen a five-year deal at Parkhead but hasn't got going with the Premiership title hopefuls yet. But he hasn't had his chance to make an impression on the team having picked up an injury and becoming a Covid close contact. Kenny is raring to go once he can climb off the sidelines and he revealed that Postecoglou has kept in constant contact with him through his early Celtic struggles.

So schlimm war es wohl nicht, drei Tage später stand er beim nächsten U-19 Spiel Irlands gegen Portugal schon wieder auf dem Platz und konnte sogar die zwischenzeitliche Führung erzielen (leider hab ich bisher kein Videomaterial von dem Spiel gefunden).

With all of the international Celts rested for the first pre-season match of the 2022/23 season, the game against Wiener Viktoria was a perfect opportunity for some of the younger players to make their mark. Johnny Kenny was one of those that featured from the start of the 7-0 victory and in his first outing with the first team, the Irish forward bagged two goals in the opening 45 minutes. While the goals will get the headlines, overall it was a convincing all-around performance from the striker before the 19-year-old was replaced at half-time, and he was delighted to be involved and make a positive impression.

Kenny war während der Hinrunde in die Championship zu Queens Park verliehen, das lief aber nicht wirklich gut. 12 Einsätze (2 davon in der Startelf) ohne Tor oder Vorlage lesen sich jedenfalls nicht besonders vielversprechend.

Entsprechend wurde die Leihe jetzt auch beendet und er für die kommende Saison zurück nach Irland, zu den Shamrock Rovers, verliehen (dort läuft die Liga ja immer von Februar bis November).

Am Wochenende hat Kenny sein erstes Ligator fĂĽr die Rovers geschossen (vorher hatte er schonmal in einem Wettbewerb namens Leinster Senior Cup getroffen wenn ich das richtig gesehen habe), beim 1-2 gegen Derry City erzielte er den zwischenzeitlichen Ausgleich (ab 1:26).

Kenny hat inzwischen sein Debüt in der irischen U-21 Nationalmannschaft gefeiert, beim 2-1 Testspielsieg gegen Island wurde er beim Stand von 1-1 eingewechselt, nur um wenig später den Siegtreffer zu erzielen (ab 1:13).

The young striker, 19, first joined Celtic back in January last year but has yet to make a senior appearance for Ange Postecoglou's side. He made the step down to the Championship at the start of the campaign to join Queen's Park on loan before returning to his homeland ahead of the January transfer window to join up with Shamrock Rovers on loan for their 2023 season. Kenny has since scored two goals in eight appearances for the Irish club and that saw him earn a call-up to Ireland's Under-21s squad for this international break. And with their clash with Iceland heading towards a 1-1 draw on Sunday afternoon, the striker was sent on as a substitute and he rewarded his manager Jim Crawford's faith by scoring the winner just minutes later. He now hopes his performances at international level can boost his chances of playing well for Shamrock Rovers and ultimately, for Postecoglou and Celtic in the Premiership next season.

Und Kenny trifft weiter, gestern erzielte er beim 4-0 Sieg gegen Dundalk den dritten Treffer fĂĽr die Rovers (ab 5:30). Die Vorlage dazu kam ĂĽbrigens von Richie Towell, falls sich an den noch jemand erinnert, auch ein ehemaliger Jugendspieler von uns.

Kenny ist weiterhin in guter Form, am letzten Wochenende erzielte er beim 2-0 gegen St Patricks das erste Tor (ab 0:35) und auch beim 2-1 Sieg gegen Sligo gestern konnte er wieder zum 1-0 treffen (ab 0:05).

Am Wochenende hat Kenny beim 5-0 Sieg gegen Drogheda sein erstes Ligator seit April erzielen können (ab 2:26). Seinen Stammplatz dort hatte er zwischenzeitlich auch verloren, das Spiel jetzt war sein erstes von Beginn an seit August...immerhin liegen die Rovers weiterhin eindeutig auf Meisterschaftskurs.

And Kenny rounded off the season by playing 90 minutes against his former side Sligo Rovers as they picked up their final three points of the campaign with a 4-2 win.
It has been a productive loan spell for the young Irishman, making over 35 appearances whilst out on loan in his homeland. During the upcoming international break, the forward will join Bosun Lawal in heading off with the Ireland Under-21 squad.

Er hat auf jeden Fall viel Spielpraxis sammeln können über die letzten Monate aber ob er mit den Zahlen wirklich eine Alternative für unseren Angriff darstellt, da würde ich (mindestens zum momentanen Zeitpunkt) doch ein Fragezeichen hinter setzen. Könnte mir gut vorstellen, dass er im Januar abermals verliehen wird.
Torschützenkönig in Irland wurde übrigens unser ehemaliger Spieler Jonathan Afolabi, für den es damals auch nie für Einsätze in der ersten Mannschaft gereicht hatte, mit 15 Treffern.

Nun ja…da sehr wahrscheinlich Kyogo und Oh im Januar beim Asien Cup sind…brauchen wir hier eigentlich noch einen Stürmer???!!! Wird spannend
