Lawwell: Celtic must charm, not threaten, their way out of Scottish football
The Parkhead chief executive recently represented Scotland on a sub-group of the powerful European Club Association which looked into the issue of cross-border leagues.
"Our natural partner is England, so we're in a wee corner talking to ourselves," Lawwell said. "But flip it and ask what happens if this does take off and we're not part of it.
"It actually gets worse because you have nations our size and bigger joining up and becoming bigger markets, and we're left behind. It changes from an opportunity to a threat if it does take off.
"If you took legal action all the way, it would be like Bosman, you'd win in the end because it [Scottish clubs being unable to play in England] is anti-competitive. But in all of these things you need commercial pull rather than pushing.
"If you're going against the grain there's friction and it'll never work. You need someone to want you. And no-one has ever wanted Scottish football or Celtic and Rangers.
"Where we are at the moment is that we're just keeping an eye on it and seeing what develops. It [beating Barcelona] was a reminder of how big we are – they were genuinely delighted we were in the draw for the last 16 of the Champions League.
"The problem is that we could buy Carlisle and call them Celtic, but we couldn't move them to Glasgow. Giving up the Champions League would also be a huge consideration. I genuinely feel, though, we would be supported through it."
Lawwell, who was speaking as Celtic unveiled a new shirt sponsorship deal with Magners estimated to be worth £3.5 million a year, is also aware that the team's European success could have its price. The future of Neil Lennon – currently on a one-year rolling deal – will now be the subject of more speculation than ever.
Lawwell regards it as his job to ensure the club will continue to run smoothly regardless of key personnel leaving. "I think Neil is content and happy," he said. "He's focused on the next three or four months and I guess it is a compliment to the club that there could be interest.
"He's done such a good job, but I think the challenge for us as a club is to ensure the pipeline of talent continues to flow. If people are there and do a good job, whether it is a player, a manager or a coach, and are tempted to move on, then you have people in the wings to fill in. But hopefully he'll be around for a long time."

    Beitragvon Gollum » Mo 4. Feb 2013, 16:22

THE majority of Celtic´s first-team are away on international duty this week, with many friendlies taking place across the globe.

Efe Ambrose booked his place in the Africa Cup of Nations´ semi-final yesterday, (Sunday), when his Nigeria side beat one of the tournament favourites, Ivory Coast, 2-1. They will take on Mali on Wednesday evening for a place in Sunday´s final. Should they fail to win, they will play either Burkina Faso, (who they drew 1-1 with in the group stages) or Ghana in the third-place play off on Saturday.

Closer to home, Scott Brown, James Forrest, Charlie Mulgrew and Kris Commons have met up with the Scotland squad ahead of their meeting with Estonia on Wednesday. The fixture, at Pittodrie, will be former Hoops boss, Gordon Strachan´s, first match in charge.
Welsh duo Joe Ledley and Adam Matthews will come up against Austria in Swansea while the Israeli pair Beram Kayal and Rami Gershon are back home for their match against Finland.
Paddy McCourt is with the N.Ireland squad for their away game with Malta while Victor Wanyama will take on Libya in Tunisia. Miku has joined up with the Venezuelan squad for a training camp in Madrid and Mikael Lustig´s Swedish side welcomes Argentina to Solna.
Thomas Rogne will be representing Norway´s Under-21s in La Manga as they continue their preparations for this summer´s European Championships with a friendly against Russia, while Paul George will take on the Czech Republic in what is his first call-up to the Republic of Ireland U21 squad since returning from his leg break.

Tony Watt, Dylan McGeouch, on-loan Celt Lewis Toshney and Robbie Thomson, who received his first call-up last week, will be in Korinthos City for Scotland´s U21 match with Greece.
Meanwhile, at Under-19 level, Scotland have called up six Celtic youngsters. Marcus Fraser, Joe Chalmers, Jamie Lindsay, Stuart Findlay, Denny Johnstone and John Herron will all travel to Holland for the friendly on Wednesday.

It is a busy week for the Celts, and while Neil Lennon is pleased his players are being recognised at that level, it is also a worrying time for him. With the UEFA Champions League tie against Juventus just over a week away, he is hoping all his players come back unscathed.
"Of all the weeks to have it, I don´t know who puts these dates in place but we have the biggest game in four or five years at the club and we have players all over the world so it´s a concern," he said.
"I´ve spoken to Gordon, and he´s in total charge of his team. He understands my situation and I have every trust in him to deal with that problem.
"We have a number of other players on international duty as well which is also a huge concern for me. The timing of these games couldn’t have been worse for me.
"Hopefully, the international coaches will take that into consideration because we want to have a full quota of players going into the Juventus game next week."

Tja, hoffen wir mal, dass wir alle fit und gesund wieder zurĂĽck bekommen!

    CHAIRMAN’S STATEMENT

I am pleased to report on our financial results for the six months ended 31 December 2012. The introductory page to these interim results summarises the main highlights.

On the pitch it has been a memorable and highly successful period. We started the new season as Scottish Premier League Champions and, since then, we have enjoyed impressive results. At the time of writing, we have a healthy lead in the race to retain our Premier League title and we remain in the Scottish FA Cup.

Of greater significance, though, has been the achievement of qualifying for the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League, the undoubted highlight being our victory over Barcelona at Celtic Park in November. Celtic surpassed the expectations of many by progressing into the competition’s knockout stages from a very tough group. Furthermore, the club’s international reputation and standing received a substantial boost. This success had a major bearing on our financial performance in the period under review.

The revenues generated by the team’s success in Europe this year have significantly impacted our half year results, with turnover increasing to £50.06m, a 71% improvement over the previous year. Celtic’s achievements, both domestically and in Europe, have had a similarly positive effect on merchandise and ticketing income, notwithstanding the current difficult economic climate.

The results on the park and additional matches produced an increase in operating expenses to £36.96m and our profit from trading, before asset transactions and exceptional operating expenses, was £14.94m - a significant uplift on last year’s figure of £0.18m for the same period.

As in previous years, we continue to make investments in the playing squad and support services. The management of the playing squad is an important aspect of our business model. In the period under review we invested ÂŁ4.65m in strengthening the first team squad, and added to this in the January transfer window.

We have a talented first-team pool, with a strong emphasis on youth. Our scouting and player identification processes continue to bear fruit, and our investment in state of the art medical and sport science facilities at Lennoxtown has contributed to optimising performance. Similarly, the ongoing strategy of investing in our Academy is yielding its own benefits as we remain committed to finding, coaching and developing Champions League quality players.

Such investment and player development initiatives have further enhanced profitability, with a profit from transfer activity of ÂŁ5.2m, largely as a consequence of the sale of Ki Sung Yueng to Swansea, in comparison to ÂŁ3.15m last year. Nevertheless, we have managed to strike a prudent balance between trading successful, valuable assets and retaining key talent to enhance our prospects of football success. Our financial strength meant that we were able to retain all our key players through the January transfer window and further enhanced our squad with the signing of Rami Gershon, Tomas Rogic and Viktor Noring.

The improvement in trading has impacted on our period end net bank debt, which stood at £0.13m, nearly £7m less than at the same point last year, well within the Company’s facilities. Our success on the park and the maintenance of our robust business model has provided stability in a challenging environment. The second half of the 2012/13 financial year is expected to follow a similar trading pattern to recent years, but buoyed by onfield success including participation in the UEFA Champions League.

Scottish Football has recently endorsed proposals to restructure our domestic league system, with the aim of generating additional interest and revenue for the benefit of fans and member clubs alike. Celtic has been happy to support initiatives it sees as being in the best interests of the Club and of the Scottish game in general.

Off the field, the Club marked its 125th Anniversary in November with a celebratory event held at St Mary’s Church in Glasgow’s Calton where the inaugural meetings that led to the Club’s formation occurred in 1887. In addition, the Celtic Charity Foundation launched an associated fund raising campaign aimed at increasing donations raised for worthy causes.

In conclusion, I would wish to pay tribute to Neil Lennon and his backroom staff, all of the players and all of the Directors, management and staff at the Club who work tirelessly to maintain the standards for which Celtic is rightly renowned. And finally, I would like to thank the fans, who have continued to show their unswerving support at a particularly turbulent but exciting time in our history.

    Ian P Bankier
    Chairman
    February 11, 2013
