Row as councillor wears Celtic top to meeting
A row has erupted at Derry City Council over a councillor wearing a Glasgow Celtic football top to a meeting.
The incident happened on Wednesday when DUP councillor Gary Middleton objected to Sinn FĂ©in councillor Colin Kelly wearing the football shirt at a confidential meeting of Derry City Council held to discuss the planned reorganisation of the body.
The DUP councillor said the football shirt was “provocative” and should not have been worn to a Council meeting.
“Like it or not, Celtic jerseys are deemed to be provocative and people can take offence,” he said.
“I will accept that this meeting was closed to the public and to the press but even so it was an extremely important meeting and I think for a councillor to turn up in a football jersey is not appropriate. But the fact that it was a Celtic jersey was worse, given the divisive nature of Celtic,” he said.
Councillor Middleton did not raise the matter during the meeting but spoke to Council Chief Executive, Sharon O’Connor about it afterwards.
Sinn FĂ©in dismissed the row as “petty” and said the jersey was worn as an ‘undergarment’.
“Colin Kelly was wearing a Celtic jersey as an undergarment covered by a tracksuit. This was a private meeting and councillor Gary Middleton would be better suited in tackling the major issues facing the city rather than being petty, including removing the sectarian flags adorning Newbuildings,” a party spokesperson said.

Celtic's majority shareholder Dermot Desmond has spoken for the first time about recent events in Scottish football and says that Rangers’ situation did not affect thinking at Parkhead.

Desmond has presided over a period of financial stability at Celtic Park at a time when Rangers have been troubled by off-field events. However, he does not expect a long wait before the Glasgow rivals are competing against each other in the top flight.

“Our attitude has always been that we can only control our own affairs and concentrate on our own affairs,” he explained.

“Anyone else’s affairs are for their own doing and their own making. Celtic is what I get up in the morning thinking about and what I go to bed thinking about.”

However, he said that the size of the Ibrox fanbase was a factor in what he believed would be the rise of Rangers in the next few years.

“Rangers is a fantastic club with a great history,” he said. “With the support that they have, they will come back.

“They will, in not too long a time, be back in the SPL. I have no doubt about that.

“They’re needed for Scottish football because of their following and the size of the club and especially their history.”

Desmond said that Celtic were benefiting from financial stability but that he would not change a prudent approach in the transfer market.

“I think that’s [down to] the executive and the prudence and direction of the board,” he said. “That’s been our plan, what I call ‘Mr Micawber economics’, that we’re just balancing revenues and expenditure.

“We’ll continue to do that and we won’t be bullied into overspending.”

International play Bhoys jet off around the world

THE Celtic squad has dispersed this week, with a number of first-team players going away on international duty to represent their nation.
Some of the players will be travelling further afield than most, with Efe Ambrose and Victor Wanyama both returning to Africa. AmbroseÂŽs Nigeria will take on Liberia in the African Cup of Nations qualifiers while Kenya will play South Africa in a friendly.
Emilio Izaguirre and Miku will both head back to South America, with IzaguirreÂŽs Honduras set to play Panama and Canada in the FIFA World Cup qualifiers. Miku will represent Venezuela when they take on Ecuador in the same tournament.
Closer to home, Georgios SamarasÂŽ Greece take on Bosnia at home before travelling away to Slovakia. Mikael Lustig has joined up with the Swedish squad for their trip to the Faroe Islands while Paddy McCourt travels to Portugal with Northern Ireland.
Fraser Forster also meets up with the England squad for the first time this week, preparing for their World Cup qualifiers against San Marino and Poland.
Meanwhile some Celts could come up against each other on Friday evening when Wales welcome Scotland to Cardiff for their Group A qualifier. Joe Ledley and Adam Matthews are in the Welsh squad, and are set to face Scott Brown, James Forrest and Charlie Mulgrew. Wales then travel to Croatia next week while Scotland go to Belgium.
Thomas Rogne has been called up to NorwayÂŽs Under-21 squad again, while Callum McGregor received his first U21 call cup for Scotland. He will be joined by Tony Watt and Dylan McGeouch for the Marbella Cup, where they will face USA and Canada in Spain.
Jackson Irvine has been named in AustraliaÂŽs squad for their training camp in Portugal while four Celts are in the Scotland U19 side for the UEFA European Championship qualifiers. Joe Chalmers, Stuart Findlay, Marcus Fraser and John Herron will join up with the squad while Jamie Lindsay, Michael Miller and Lewis Kidd are on stand-by.
Jordan Hart, Mark Barrowman, Calum Waters, Luke Donnelly, Liam Henderson, Connor McManus and Paul McMullan have all been named in ScotlandÂŽs U17 squad for the training camp in Falkirk while the U16s include Connor Cullen, Jamie McCart, Scott Lochhead, Ryan Caird and Connor McLaren.
