or the second month running Hearts have failed to pay players on time.

Six players plus manager John McGlynn are believed to have missed out on their October salaries which were due today.

The SPL have been informed verbally about the situation after bringing in new rules that punish clubs that fail to meet their commitments.

Last season Hearts failed to pay their players on time on a number of occasions to the anger of a number of other clubs.

The Tynecastle club are viewed as one of the highest payers in Scotland but have been run erratically under the leadership of Vladimir Romanov.

There were threats of strike action from players last season with some players, notably Ian Black forced to take on work elsewhere with the midfielder doubling up as a painter and decorator.

Last term, three straight months of delayed player wages prompted an official complaint from the players, via union PFA Scotland, to the SPL, but action was averted in January after Hearts met the demands imposed.

That prompted the SPL to bring in legislation replacing the previous rules which required players to make a complaint before any action is taken.

Over the course of the calendar year it’s believed that the Hearts wage bill has been dramatically trimmed with most of the big earners that helped the club to lift the Scottish Cup moving on.

During the last transfer window David Templeton was sold to Sevco for a fee believed to be in the region of ÂŁ800,000.

Dundee United chairman Stephen Thompson has given an upbeat statement on the clubs finances laughing off Neil Doncaster’s prediction of SPL Armageddon.



The sale of David Goodwillie allowed United to post a profit of £1.45m for the year ending June 2012 with the clubs’ overdraft down to a manageable £3.7m.

With the return of the derby fixture against Dundee and improved prospects of success for clubs across the SPL Thompson was pleased to give an upbeat report to accompany the clubs audited accounts.

“From a Dundee United point of view, Armageddon never happened,” the Tannadice chief stated..

“Sky and ESPN signed a new contract and the game has moved on. We had a really exciting game here against Aberdeen last Saturday – great crowd, open football and one or two young players. I thought it was a great advert for our game.

“It was a hard summer but we have moved on and I don’t want to talk about Rangers at all, I want to talk about my own club.”

Looking back to the future Thompson believes that investing in youth is the key to future success on and off the pitch.

“We have signed up Stuart Armstrong who is the Scotland Under-21 captain, and we have a lot of young talent coming in at under-19 and under-17 level,” Thompson explained. “It got lost for a number of years at this club and it takes a number of years to get it back again.

“It’s absolutely the way forward for the club, getting youngsters into the first team and hopefully you get the odd sale that reduces the debt, because my ambition is to clear the debt but to have a successful team on the park.

“Not if you’re getting players through to your first team,” he said. “If we never get a fee for Johnny Russell, he has 18 months left on his contract, he has played for the first team for a few years and we’ll have money back for his contribution on the park.

“When you get guys who have never made the first team and are snapped up because they are seen as an emerging talent, that’s when you feel you are getting nothing back.”

Hearts face a tax tribunal alleging that the club owe HMRC ÂŁ1.75m in tax dating back to 2005.

The claim dates back to the early days of Vladimir Romaov’s reign at the club when upto a dozen players came in on loan from Kaunas, the Lithuanian side owned by Romanov.

HMRC are claiming that tax on the full salaries should have been paid in the United Kingdom, rather than in Lithuania, where tax rates are lower. Hearts believe the scenario is no different to any routine loan player arrangement, when wages can be subsidised by parent clubs.

The information came to light as the Edinburgh side prepared for a share issue designed to raise ÂŁ1.7m which is remarkably close to the figure being demanded by HMRC.

Hearts have had a number of problems with HMRC in recent times but have so far always been able to settle their bills.

Whether the Hearts issue has similarities with Rangers remains to be seen although on the surface this issue is purely down to the meathod of taxation rather than whether undeclared payments were made outwith those contracts lodged with the SFA and SPL.

Like Rangers Hearts promise to ‘robustly defend’ the action with a club statement saying: “Heart of Midlothian plc. are subject to a significant ongoing dispute with HM Revenue & Customs (“HMRC”) which, if it ultimately goes against the Company, could have a dramatically negative effect on the Company. Specifically, HMRC has claimed unpaid tax liabilities of circa £1.75 million (excluding interest and penalties) in relation to the arrangements between the Company and Kaunas FC in relation to certain players who were loaned to the Company by Kaunas FC.

“The Directors are attempting to robustly defend those claims but the burden of proof is on the Company and the tax will be payable unless the Company is successful in challenging the claims.”

SFA President Campbell Ogilvie switched to become Hearts Operations Director from Rangers in 2005 while retaining his place as treasurer of the SFA.
